Andres Oppenheimer of the Miami Herald wrote an intriguing piece recently on the splash effect of the coup, or crisis, or whatever term least offends someone of Honduras new leadership and recent election, and how the major powers in Latin America have tried unsuccessfully to remedy the situation. Oppenheimer argues that the US, Brazil and the OAS have all succeeded in failure in their own unique ways. Failure for the three comes as follows. For Brazil, its hypocrisy of recognizing Irans and Cubas undemocratic leadership, while criticizing Honduras recent elections. For the US, the flip-flopping that comes with a constant backtracking of statements on Honduras. This is most poignantly shown in the support the US gives to the new government, while asking for greater cooperation, often after the fact when it is too late to alter elections or policy decisions. The OAS, comes in with its own actions of one-sidedness for taking the side of Zelaya completely and ignoring the rights and established powers of the institutions of Honduras and their legal system in ousting the former President. The Oppenheimer article is one of great interest and makes very strong points against the major powers in the region, one well worth a read.

I don’t think this was one of ObaMao’s bonheaded disasters. I think it was coldly deliberate to show that he had the power to FORCE the people of Honduras to re-instate his communist brethern.
I think Sir Hope’nchange almost wet his pants that Americans would be taking notice of how easily it was done peacefully and without a shot fired.
If you’ll notice, he’s ordered a build-up of troops within the homeland to a strength of 1,000,000 by January 30th, pulling personnel from military peace keeping bases all over the planet.
I hope he doesn’t sleep well at night waiting for the knock on his door in the middle of the night.
Americans who have young family members in the military need to be informing their young what he’s up to. Thousands are joining the Oathkeepers, as well as law enforcement. We have get them to understand they will be called upon to fire against Americans who love this country and are trying to save it.
The last civil war in the US 3.5% of the population was killed off because the people were fooled it was fighting a great humanitarian war, when in fact it was fought over the tariffs from the ports the south held that fed the government coffers.
We can’t afford to let them fool us again.
The US's failure in Honduras is more a reflection that it was abjectly wrong about what happened there. The president, Zelaya, tried to change an unchangeable part of the Honduran constitution. That is treason by any measure and the Honduran legislature and Supreme Court overwhelmingly slapped Zelaya down in a perfectly legal and constitutional manner.
0ba-Mao, Hillary and the State Dept. all backed the position that Mel Zelaya's treason was some sort of high democratic principle that must be upheld. Typical liberal support of lawlessness when it suits a liberal agenda.
I agree with you. The goal by the new government is to go into the Brazilian Embassy and root out Zelaya.
Let him sit there until even Chavez won’t return his calls.
Why should we let him fester there and be a focal point for every Commie in Latin America? There is a point where the Honduran goverment will say enough is enough. Time to root him out of there.
I doubt that anybody is going to pay attention to him anymore. As for rooting him out, embassies are sovereign territory so it would only cause Honduras unnecessary trouble. Just make sure he doesn’t sneak out and get away.
The risk to storming the embassy will be a short term embarrasment. Karl Von Clauswitz one said,”It is true that we should always choose the case with the lease uncertainty. That would be a terrible mistake. There are instances in which the most daring action is the wisest choice”
The consequences of violating the sovereignty of an embassy could be to bring together a coalition of other governments to do what they had in mind in the first place. It would also put their own embassies in danger. Either you support the rule of law that Honduras has taken great pains to protect or you don't.
My Grand Uncle (who happen to be President of Honduras fo 18 years) did things their way. This is going to happen sooner or later.
Either Zelaya is going to walk out of the Embassy or he is going to be dragged out.One of these two options will happen. The Honduran people are fed up with him.
That’s too bad. Honduras has acted exceptionally through all of this. I suppose sooner or later the mob mentality will prevail though.
Read more about my Grand Uncle General Tiburcio Carías Andino how he handled things while President of Honduras. They have stadiums and streets named after him
By the way.... He had my grandfather arrested and Somoza of Nicaragua stopped him from being executed and paid his bail
