Administration Outlines Afghan War Endgame Official: U.S. troops will start leaving region 'well before' end of first term

NBC News and news services

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama plans to send 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan over six months, an accelerated timetable — with an endgame built in — that would have the first Marines there as early as Christmas, a senior administration official told The Associated Press.

U.S. troops are expected to start leaving the region 'well before' the end of Obama's first term, the AP reported Tuesday. A senior government official told NBC contributor Col. Jack Jacobs that the president believes that a transition from American-led combat to Afghan leadership of the effort will begin in July 2011.

With the full complement of new troops expected to be in Afghanistan by next summer, the heightened pace of Obama's military deployment in the 8-year-old war appears to mimic the 2007 troop surge in Iraq, a 20,000-strong force addition under former President George W. Bush. Similar in strategy to that mission, Obama's Afghan surge aims to reverse gains by Taliban insurgents and to secure population centers in the volatile south and east parts of the country.

“O sends in THIRTY THOUSAND troops into harms way under a catch and release program...Fat lips? you get court martialed. And you cant point guns at suspects...”

Don’t forget the crown jewel of the current rules of engagement: no civilian casualties allowed or tolerated!

Very practical thinking in a conflict where NONE of the enemy wear a uniform.

He isn’t ‘0’ for nothing!

July 2011, no matter what is going on there. Now what coincides with around July 2011. I see he’s still he’s in campaign mode. MO has no intention of leaving the WH in 3 years. She be likin’ her new digs and the perks that go along with it. She wants that last 4 year so she can travel, do things they can’t do now. Lame ducks don’t care about polls.

The Taliban can just wait until 2012, and then Afghanistan is theirs if ZerObama is still there.

and he’ll announce this with a back drop of cadets instead of the usual oval office.

Yet again the picture has to be perfect and all hollywood instead of just saying this by himself at the desk to the nation.

I won’t be watching anyway as he makes me puke and what the hell is with those purple lips? EEK

Peace with honor. Peace in our time. Land for peace. Exit Strategy.

What they don’t understand is the difference between a war and an operation. An operation can have a clearly defined exit strategy. A war, well you can have an outcome you hope for, but the enemy gets a vote too. And it doesn’t help with you tell the whole world your war plan in an East Wing Address that bumps Snoopy.

Idiotbama. The Bush Surge was helped along by the Iraqi forces rapidly increasing their own numbers, and by local patriots such as the sheiks in Anbar Province and the Sons of Iraq. There is no similar popular anti-Taliban groundswell in Afghanistan now. All Bambi can do is try to bribe the Taliban with Billions and Billions of Monopoly money.

The head of the snake is in Pakistan; one can only pray that there's a lot of brilliant behind-the-scenes political/diplomatic maneuvering there, that would undercut the Taliban [/sarc].

Fat chance of that happening in 10 years, let alone one. The odds are that Bambi will beg for diplomatic help from Putin and Hu by the time the 2012 campaign starts.
