Newt Gingrich warns of 'destructive' GOP primaries (The Rhino Strikes Back)
Politico ^ | 11/13/09 3:45 PM EST | JONATHAN MARTIN

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich predicted disaster
for his party if the conservative wing of the GOP
continues to field independent candidates to the right
of the party’s nominee.

“If we get into a cycle where there are tea parties and
there are conservative third-party candidates, we will
make [Nancy] Pelosi speaker for life,” Gingrich told
POLITICO in an interview Thursday, calling the
practice “totally destructive.”

But Gingrich, who broke with many fellow conservatives
by getting behind the liberal Republican who was
nominated but ultimately dropped out and backed the
Democrat in a New York special congressional election,
admitted that Dede Scozzafava was too far to the left to
hold the GOP’s center-right coalition together

What evidence is there that he could do it again? What is he proposing that could have the same impact as the Contract with America?

I agree, it does lie with the GOP. Look, I’m not a Republican...I left that inept party years ago. But I’m a conservative who doesn’t want to see Democrats get even more control.

You run the risk of Democrats running everything with overwhelming majorities. Scary times.

I would agree, after the primary, in the general election, conservatives then should not field a dividing candidate.

I agree with what Newt actually said (rather than what DaveTesla thinks Newt said).

DaveTesla thinks Newt said "Conservatives should not field primary candidates that are more conservative than the one the local party officials are backing".

What Newt is actually saying is "ONCE THE PRIMARY ELECTION HAS SELECTED THE REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE, then Republicans should back the Republican candidate rather than fielding a 3rd Party candidate, that that will generally mean splitting the conservative vote so the Democrat wins"

The NY election was a special case in that no primary election happened.

I am not sure a private political party’s governing by-laws are enshrined in state statute. But I beleieve they are adopted during the party’s last state convention.

So if at the last state convention that was just held prior to this last “general” election was not specifically changed, chances are, nothing will change in the primaries.

And they often infiltrate GOP primaries to give the liberal/RINO the nod, over the wishes of party members.

And we need to push the GOP to fix the primary system to reduce that tendency, like requiring that somebody have been a registered Repub for at least a year before being admitted to the Primary.

Sure sounds like he's admitting he's a RINO, doesn't it! Perhaps he's the subject of a chapter in Gov. Palin's upcoming book. Drudge has a snippet. drudge

I learned something any way....remember McCain's Palin 'Handler'...we learn her name was Nicole. Sounds like Gingrich and Nicole have a lot in common! Just way too damn liberal for most of us to stomach.

I believe I read years ago that Sanger lived in AZ in her last years and was friendly with Barry and Peggy Goldwater. Who is a reliable conservative since Jesse Helms, whom Goldwater disliked too.

Michael Steele is another big failure too. We would have been as well off keeping the KY apparatchik, Mr. Duncan, there. Nobody knew who he was. Ken Blackwell would have been far superior to Steele.

Yes, I have seen this happen within the party, as well. As I have mentioned before, the regular, grassroot party member doesn’t have a political voice in the party. The party is controlled, and has been for a long time, by the corporate interests, or the corporate wing of the party. They are by and large the largest contributors, and, therefore, the most powerful.

The grassroot members are simply used as window-dressing, or decoys, and on election day, to knock on doors.

We can change it though. While the grassroot wing of the party may not have the money, they do have the vote. And, in the end, getting votes is what it’s all about. In order to actually change the present situation, grassroots members of the party must be organized. We can do this by means of the internet whereas we actually couldn’t achieve this level of organization without adequate funds earlier. But now with the advent of the internet, we, the masses, do have a chance to make a difference. All we have to do is learn how to use it.

Unless that change was put into place during the last state-wide election, it isn’t going to be in the state party’s by-laws for the 2012 election cycle, unless your state party has an off-year state-wide convention as well — which I ain’t never heard of any.

What difference does it make whether Nanzi Pelosi or Dede Scozzafavvzzaafzzaavazzza (sp?) is Speakerette of the House?

It's not my job to fall in line with The Republican Party's nominee.

It's The Republican Party's job to find a nominee sufficiently attractive enough to me to vote for it.

Learn it. Live it. Love it.

Staten,
What you say makes sense. But what about the McCain nomination. How is it the party selects a RINO candidate before the majority of Republicans can get to the polls? We ended up with a candidate who couldn’t defeat a noob.

Conservative groups should make public statements totally disapproving of Newt, and making it known that he is not a conservative.

You have it exactly backward.

Gingrich's startling victory in the ‘94 elections forced Clinton to the right on the budget, welfare reform and more.

Gingrich won.

“They” (of the following chart) just want to perpetuate the left-right paradigm. Everyone on this chart, unless proven otherwise, is the enemy of free Americans.

Newt is cfr.
