A Boston city councilor is fired up over attempts by high-end condo owners to muzzle Old Ironsides twice-daily cannon blasts, calling their complaints of excessive noise absolutely ridiculous and vowing to push for a city resolution to support the time-honored tradition.
Old Ironsides is part of Boston history, said Councilor Sal LaMattina, who represents Charlestown, where several residents in a swanky condominium development near the Naval Yard have launched a letter-writing campaign to silence the 44-gun frigates cannon salutes.

Condos not doubt full of elitist, the foreign born and some sort of scum normally found in septic tanks and the office of Barney Frank.
I’m guessing the salutes were going on well before those condos were ever built. It’s a little late for the condo folks to be taking this under consideration now.
Those condos would not exist but for the USS Constitution and all the other ships of the United States Navy. And it would appear that these people moved into these condos long after Old Ironsides began firing her guns.
They should sue their realtors.
As a Massachusetts Conservative (yes, there are a few) I took great heart reading the comments after the article...:)
Especially “DOUBLE THE POWDER AND SHORTEN THE FUSE!”
I don’t know who wrote the headline, but it’s not a “battleship”
A whole lot of morons say “battleship” when they really mean “warship.”
A = B, right?
Reminds me of people who buy property near a already existing airport then complain about the noise of planes taking off.
The U.S.S. Constitution is a frigate, not a battleship.
The responsibility falls directly on the newcomer, not the pre-existing condition. Even if they failed the basic obligation of due diligence before signing on the dotted line, it's the fault of no one but them.
You moved in, found something you don't like, something that was clearly there before you moved in, move out. Problem solved.
Yes but a call to prayer 5 times a day over loud speakers is OK!!
Poll results so far:
Should the cannons on Old Ironsides be silenced?
46% - Never! Traditions must be preserved
2% - Yes. Neighbors have a right to peace
3% - At least silence the guns on weekends
49% - Fire on the condos, that will end the debate
Poll is on lower right side of page.
Quite right.
Also, there was no such thing as a “battleship” when she was built.
Winning with 49%. I agree, one 20 gun broadside ought to still the opposition. If not, jibe and let loose with the port side.
I’m all for continued cannonades from the good ship, but it’s ironic that a politician from Taxachusetts supports that symbol, while his Demonrat MA colleagues are working tirelessly to destroy what is left of the really important Constitution—our governing document.

Firing on the Condos is leading with 49% of the vote. :-)
It's the horrible militaristic violence of the noise, and the disgusting jingoistic, nationalistic, rightwing patriotic mindset that supports such machismo displays of violence amongst the peace-loving populace.
“Also, there was no such thing as a battleship when she was built.”
Yeah, but in modern parlance “SOL” doesn’t mean “Ship of the Line” anymore.
