ORLANDO, Fla. — Police in Orlando say a gunman has been apprehended after killing one person and injuring five others at a downtown office building where he was let go two years ago.

Police Chief Val Demings says 40-year-old Jason Rodriguez surrendered to police at his mother's home after officers saw him through a window and asked him to come out.

Yesterday it was a Muslim in a mass shooting. Today it’s a Cuban/Mexican (by what his name is and what he looks like).

Before, it was all sorts of others doing the mass shootings. It seems to be part of our culture to do mass shootings...

Here is a glance at some of the worst U.S. mass shootings:

April 3, 2009: A 41-year-old man opened fire at an immigrant community center in Binghamton, N.Y., killing 11 immigrants and two workers. Jiverly Wong, a Vietnamese immigrant and a former student at the center, killed himself as police rushed to the scene.

March 10, 2009: Michael McLendon, 28, killed 10 people, including his mother, four other relatives and the wife and child of a local sheriff’s deputy, across two rural Alabama counties. He then committed suicide.

Feb. 14, 2008: Former student Steven Kazmierczak, 27, opened fire in a lecture hall at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, fatally shooting five students and wounding 18 others before committing suicide.

Dec. 5, 2007: Robert A. Hawkins, 19, opened fire with a rifle in Omaha, Neb., at a Von Maur store in the Westroads Mall, killing eight people before taking his life. Five more people were wounded, two critically.

April 16, 2007: Cho Seung-Hui, 23, fatally shot 32 people in a dorm and a classroom at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, then killed himself in the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

Feb. 12, 2007: Sulejman Talovic, 18, killed five and wounded four at the Trolley Square mall in Salt Lake City. He was then shot and killed by police.

Oct. 2, 2006: Charles Carl Roberts IV, 32, shot to death five girls at West Nickel Mines Amish School in Pennsylvania, then killed himself.

March 21, 2005: Jeffrey Weise, a 16-year-old student, killed nine people – his grandfather and his grandfather’s companion at home, and then five fellow students, a teacher and a security guard at Red Lake High School in Red Lake, Minn. – before killing himself. Seven students were wounded.

March 12, 2005: Terry Ratzmann, 44, gunned down members of his congregation as they worshipped at the Brookfield Sheraton in Brookfield, Wis., slaying seven and wounding four before killing himself.

July 29, 1999: Former day trader Mark Barton, 44, killed nine people in shootings at two Atlanta brokerage offices, then committed suicide.

April 20, 1999: Students Eric Harris, 18, and Dylan Klebold, 17, opened fire at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., killing 12 classmates and a teacher and wounding 26 others before committing suicide in the school’s library.

March 24, 1998: Andrew Golden, 11, and Mitchell Johnson, 13, killed four girls and a teacher at a Jonesboro, Ark., middle school. Ten others were wounded in the shooting.

Oct. 16, 1991: George Hennard, 35, smashed his pickup through a Luby’s Cafeteria window in Killeen, Texas, and fired on the lunchtime crowd with a high-powered pistol, killing 22 people. At least 20 others were wounded.

Aug. 20, 1986: Postal worker Patrick Henry Sherrill killed 14 people in an Edmond, Okla., post office, then killed himself.

July 18, 1984: James Oliver Huberty, 41, an out-of-work security guard, shot and killed 21 people at a McDonald’s restaurant in San Ysidro, Calif. He was slain by police.

Aug. 1, 1966: Former Marine sharpshooter Charles Whitman climbed the stairs to the observation deck at the University of Texas Tower and began a 96-minute shooting spree, killing 14 people and wounding 31 before he was shot and killed. He had stabbed his mother and wife to death earlier.

Mass shootings/killings have been part of our society for a long while now... On and on it goes...

The difference is that the Orlando shooter didn’t do it because he thought his religion was telling him to. There will always been crazy people who decide to “resolve” a workplace (in his case) or a marriage or other dispute by killing everybody around them. But on your list, all the others - the Muslims - did it because of their religion, and they said so at the time.

I am aware of the Islamo-fascist governmental idealogy (that many call Islam) designed to take over the world under a one-world government using terror and killings to help carry out the deed.

And while that part may be true, mass shootings have still been going on here in the U.S. for a long while now (along with a goodly number of individual shootings, that get a whole lot less press coverage).

I’m afraid that we’re killing off each other, in this country, a whole lot faster than the Muslims are able to do it — in this country (including what was done on 9/11).

Or you can say:
When a Muslim commits mass murder we can not tell if it is an act of insanity or if he/she was practicing their religion.

So let me guess, they’re now going to spend more time covering this, and saying about “general mass shootings” than covering the 1st major terrorist attack (on an army base, no less) on US soil since 9/11

We’re definitely missing about 20-30 that have occurred in just the past year. Think about entire family murder/suicide that have taken place this year alone. Mass shootings were almost unheard of many years ago. They have become more and more frequent and is something that should not be accepted or numbed to. Something is very wrong, horribly wrong.

No doubt — that is so...

This list came from the press and I’m sure they put it together in a hurry. Someone already let me know about another one to add. I’m afraid we would have to write a book, if we included all the mass shootings that are perpetrated upon ourselves in this country...

Well..., as far as I’m concerned, the military shouldn’t allow practicing Muslims in. If you let the enemy in, you’re going to get attacked from the inside. It only makes sense.

Furthermore, the U.S. should outlaw the Islamo-fascist government idealogy that people refer to as Islam — because it’s a foreign government/entity designed expressly for the overthrow of this country and its system of government, and thereby — illegal.

But, that would be way too smart for them to do that... so what can I say?

You said — And His name isn’t Allah.

Yeah! And those Muslims have an inferiority complex when it comes to “Allah”. That’s why they always yell — “Allahu Akbar” when doing all those terrorist acts — just to make sure they can try and convince everyone of — “The God Allah is greater” ...

Ummm..., they mean greater than the “God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob” .... LOL...

They’ll never win... :-)

Your thinking is correct. Here we are AT WAR with militant Islam.....and men schooled in Islamic precepts and who are practicioners of same are not only welcomed into the military, but pushed along to higher ranks through affirmative action.

Then to boot, they're allowed to remain in the military even though they publicly talk about "killing the infidels".

What kind of warped people are running the military? And.....I'm NOT talking about the military leaders, but the civilian leaders. And....I'll answer my own question, the civilian leaders are either Obamified, or doubly-Obamified.

This is terrifying when you really start thinking of what's going on and what else is going to happen.

If “we” (the posters here) included all the mass shootings that have occurred in our society, in this country, it would be a long list. And it is perpetrated upon ourselves, as these are people who live in this country and are part of this society and have been all their lives (for the most part, until we get to the more recent “Muslim terrorists” — but that hasn’t slowed down the mass shootings that our own people do on themselves, either...).

LOL..., you need to read a bit better... :-)

Take a look back up at that statement. There’s no responsibility to be had for making a list. A list is just that — a list. And very simply put, if we were to include all the mass shootings in that list, it would be a very long list indeed.

And you’ll see that the “we” that is involved there, are posters who would make such a list... :-)

But, aside from such a list that “we” might assemble here in these postings... there is a collective “we” to this society that we live in, even when I’m not directly responsible for someone else’s actions.

I have a family in which there is “a lot of we” involved ... of which I had no part in assembling... LOL... however, they are my family nonetheless (extended or by marriage and/or birth).

I probably have a number of criminals in there somewhere, too — maybe a drug dealer and who knows..., probably a felon or two, thrown in. Nonetheless, they still comprise the “we” of my family (wanted or not, and whether I had any part of them being there in the first place... :-) ...). There is a “we” that we all are a part of whether “we” like it or not... LOL (and regardless of any personal responsibility that you may have).

What will resolve the dilemma is getting the Leftist influence the “H” out of our system of government, and out of our media, schools, etc.

It’s the Leftist influence that is the root cause of the ugliness that exists throughout not only our Nation, but the entire World not already terribly disfigured by Islam.

It’s true that we have many homicides, but far more people die in auto accidents. It’s worth remembering that almost all killing sprees are stopped when someone else with a gun shows up. Until someone shows up armed, the killing spree continues.

> Something is very wrong, horribly wrong.

Our country has become a culture of death.

Life no longer has value.

Consider abortion, whereby over 40 million gestate babies have been murdered.

Consider the new “health care” bill, whereby critical care will be limited to the “most productive” to reduce cost.

The prevailing philosophy in our culture is this.

* Everything came from nothing out of nowhere for no apparent reason.

* Life is just a curious side effect of an unknowing and uncaring cosmos.

* When you die, you are just so much compost.

* The best you can hope for is a life of self-gratification and a painless extinction.

If you’re one of those who believes he’s not getting his, why not just go out and blow away a bunch of people you consider to be instrumental in denying your self-gratification?

THAT is a very big part of what I believe is horribly wrong.

Well, the interesting thing about that list that I copied from the news source, it shows a geat number (if not a majority) killing themselves, after they had killed all that they had wanted to. It's not necessarily someone stopping them that ends the killing, but that they ended the killing themselves and then committed suicide. In fact, the one that I added to that list, from another FReeper asking me to (the school in Kentucky), the shooter simply quit and dropped the gun and no one was armed around him to stop him.

For whatever reason, when the shooters are done, they simply quit and give themselves up and/or commit suicide. That's what happened today. The shooter simply quit shooting, went to his mother's house and gave himself up.

That was the case with the Virginia Tech killer. AFTER people showed up with guns, he killed himself. I think that is usually the way it goes.

In the Fort Hood murders, the murderer was stopped by a lady with a gun. There is no indication that he would have stopped on his own.

Yeah, there are a couple in that list, like that — but the overwhelming majority simply stopped on their own and killed themselves or gave up. Just count the list and see for yourself.

It was on a news article from Google, after doing a search on the search terms “Orlando shooting” (under “News”). I didn’t bother with the source of the article because it was all stuff that I remembered as happening and I knew it was public information (at least I remembered it in my little head... :-) ...).

Now.., as far as making a more complete and comprehensive list — by all means, “go for it”... :-)

I would encourage that to make a more comprehensive view of what happens in these things.

“Now.., as far as making a more complete and comprehensive list — by all means, “go for it”... :-)”

I've seen long lists of Muslim murders in this country. I'm not going to make or retrieve a list now. But, off the top of my head, I remember the LAX airport shootings by a Muslim. It was at the Jewish airline booth. There was also the DC sniper, who was Muslim. There are more mass murders by Muslims in this country that are not on the list you provided. The Trolley Square Mall shooting, on your list, was done by a Muslim, but it does not say so. That might apply to other cases on that list.

It is easy to get a faulty impression because the press does their best to cover up the Muslim connection. Most press reports simply omitted the Muslim identity in the the Trolley Square case. They certainly downplayed it with the Beltway sniper. In the case of the Fort Hood shootings, NBC and CBS nightly news reports, as of Thursday, did not mention that the murderer was Muslim. In the case of the shoe bomber, the press covered up his Muslim connection for many days, perhaps weeks. I first learned that he was Muslim from Ann Coulter. Kudos to Ann. Then it was reported by many sources.

This is an excerpt from a good article:

“Prior to 2009, there have been at least 20 terrorist plots broken up after September 11, 2001—aimed at subways, malls, military bases, airports, bridges, and synagogues. Those foiled cabals are in addition to more common scattered murdering by freelancing angry killers, who in some very general way either evoked radical Islam, their own faith, the Palestinian cause, al-Qaedistic Islamism, or solidarity with worldwide Islam (from the Beltway sniper to the UNC and the San Francisco car murderers), and a number of lethal attacks on Jewish centers and temples resulting in numerous deaths (from the LAX attacks to the San Francisco and Seattle shootings).

In 2002, long ago, I wrote an article in which I called this al Qaedism and updated it with more recent examples in 2007.

In this year alone, aside from the recent mass murdering at Ft. Hood, there have been four more terrorist plots uncovered. Colorado resident Najibullah Zazi was recently indicted for conspiring to use explosives in the U.S., apparently as part of a plot to let off a bomb in New York on the anniversary of 9/11. In addition, North Carolina residents Daniel Patrick Boyd and Hysen Sherifi were arrested and charged with conspiring to murder U.S. military personnel at Quantico, Virginia. In Texas, Hosam Maher Husein Smadi—a 19-year-old Jordanian citizen who was in the U.S. illegally—was arrested and charged after he placed a would-be bomb near Fountain Place, a 60-story office tower in downtown Dallas.

Most recently in Boston, a Massachusetts man was arrested in connection with terrorist plots that included attacks on U.S. shopping malls and on two White House officials. Tarek Mehanna, 27, of Sudbury, Mass, was charged with plotting with other terrorists from 2001 to May 2008 to carry out overseas and domestic terrorist attacks— including killing shoppers and first responders at malls.”

Oh..., I can look up that “terrorist list” of all terrorist attacks all over the globe, if that’s what you’re talking about. It a fairly comprehensive list. But, I already know about the Islamic terrorist threat and what they’ve done.

BUT, in this list that I copied and if it were expanded by Freepers, what we’re talking about here — are “mass shootings” — where someone (terrorist or disgruntled employee or crazy guy or some loon or whatever) goes out and shoots up a group of people (for whatever crazy reason he has [whether it’s a religious-crazy or plain-crazy..., whatever it may be).

So, terrorist attacks are one thing and mass shootings in our society (of which that list represents it) are another thing.

And in that list, I know that people would have a tendancy to put in another group of shootings that I wouldn’t categorize under this public mass shooting. That group is a family killing, where one member of the family takes out the whole family and then kills themselves or surrenders. That’s of another category altogether.

Yesterday’s “mass shooting” I would put in that “public mass shooting” list, too — but as Islamic-terror motivated, while today’s mass shooting as a crazy/disgruntled and nutso-guy acting insanely.

So, you could get three lists going here. One of those lists is already compiled and is quite complete. The Islamic terrorist list of attacks is already compiled, up-to-date and quite complete and goes back for many years.

The other list is the public mass shootings. And then you could put together another list of “private mass shootings/killings” (where the people are related).

Say..., can we get a government grant on these studies? ... LOL...

Being that this is Orlando, there is a good chance that he was Puerto Rican, NOT Cuban or Mexican. He could be none of the above, however.

Mass shootings/killings have been part of our society for a long while now... On and on it goes...

In America, sometimes people try to shoot a bunch of other people. Invariably, they are stopped. And the liberal media and anti-gunners try to increase the emotional impact of these tragedies in any way possible. One of those ways is to hammer on the use of the word "mass" - like you have.

But in communist countries, there have been true mass killings. Not thousands, or hundreds of thousands, but millions and millions of people killed. In fact, over a hundred million people killed. Those are true "mass" killings.

So when some "observer" like you describes and emphasizes a multiple shooting as a "mass killing," you are knowingly and deliberately trying to create an equivalency comparison with the genuine communist "mass killings" of millions of people.

And to help this comparison, you don't contrast the people who die in a multiple shooting with the hundred million gun owners in the U.S. who did not participate in that shooting, or the two million people each year who use guns to warn off a threat of physical violence without ever firing a shot.

So what's my point? Simply that you aren't anywhere near neutral, and you aren't a mere observer of statistics. That you have a very devious and sinister agenda - to play with words and concepts to try to poison people's understanding of their "culture" and "society," and thereby get a free and good people to think of themselves as the moral equivalents of mass murdering communists.

So to me, you not only slander peaceful, sane, gun-owning Americans, and endanger millions who are safe from threat each year because of their gun ownership, but you also slander and violate the memory of over a hundred million people who were victims of genuine mass killings.

That's just my way of saying that my "we" is not your "we."

You were saying ...

But in communist countries, there have been true mass killings. Not thousands, or hundreds of thousands, but millions and millions of people killed. In fact, over a hundred million people killed. Those are true "mass" killings.

There are different categories and kinds of killings. There are killings for hire, killings during crimes committed for other reasons, there are killings by the Islamic terrorists, and there are killings in war and also there are killings by dictators and despots who can kill many more than any citizen or even those Islamic terrorists have done.

But, in this case (when using the terminology "mass killings" in America), this is an instance of the kind of killings in which they are done by people in this country killing other people in a public setting. Those are the ones which are referred to as "mass killings" (and/or public killings). That's the kind where someone ends up killing people they may have known (worked with or associated with or related to) and also others in the public right along with them.

We're all very familiar with this kind of "mass killing" in America, in public with strangers and/or some who may be known by the perpetrator[s]. We've seen it enough times in the last few decades...

No, in this case it was an Islamic terrorist killing. And in other cases in America, there are - as you said, "killings for hire, killings during crimes committed for other reasons."

Then there are killings "where someone ends up killing people they may have known (worked with or associated with or related to) and also others in the public right along with them." But what you don't mention is that these latter killings, despite their screaming, blood-spattered gun-grabber headlines, are statistically the absolutely least likely cause of gun death in America.

So my point stands. You pervert statistics to bloat the perception of these types of killings, you invoke monstrous associations, and you hide statistics which would easily reveal the miniscule threat of such occurences compared to other dangers. And why? Because you want people to fear guns, to doubt their competency, and to move politically towards voting for regimes which would delegalize and seize guns from the people, and put them solely in the hands of the government.

Which is exactly the scenario proven to be historically necessary for, as you put it: "killings by dictators and despots who can kill many more than any citizen or even those Islamic terrorists have done."

What a nice goal for your efforts.
