FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) — Officials say a 13th person has died after a gunman opened fire yesterday afternoon at Texas' Fort Hood. Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, a suspect in the mass shooting that wounded 30, is on a ventilator and unconscious after being shot four times. In the early chaos of the shooting, authorities believed they had killed the shooter.

FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) — As officials try to piece together what led to yesterday's shooting rampage at Texas' Fort Hood that left 13 dead, the FBI, local police and other agencies have searched the apartment of the Army psychiatrist suspected in the attack. Authorities had evacuated Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan's Killeen, Texas, apartment complex before the search. Officials haven't said what was found.

"FORT HOOD, Texas — Military officials were starting Friday to piece together what may have pushed an Army psychiatrist trained to help soldiers in distress to turn on his comrades in a shooting rampage that killed 13 people and wounded 30 in Texas.

The suspected shooter, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, was on a ventilator and unconscious in a hospital after being shot four times during the shootings at the Army's sprawling Fort Hood, post officials said. In the early chaos after the shootings, authorities believed they had killed him, only to discover later that he had survived.

In Washington, a senior U.S. official said authorities at Fort Hood initially thought one of the victims who had been shot and killed was the shooter. The mistake resulted in a delay of several hours in identifying Hasan as the alleged assailant.

Authorities have not ruled out that Hasan was acting on behalf of some unidentified radical group, the official said. He would not say whether any evidence had come to light to support that theory."

He had been associated with a radical mosque in VA(his parents had gone there, at least), but I think he was probably just on a one-man jihad mission when he attacked the soldiers at Fort Hood.

I think this means something. If it didn't, the media would be going out of its way to deny any association with radical Islam. We'll see. The "lone nut" theory may still triumph.

Only conservatives seem concerned over how this was a hate crime. The rest of the “news” media will not look at the real issues. Just imagine though if a white Christian guy had done it. We all know the reaction that would have followed. “He was motivated by racism” and hate for certain leaders, they would have said. It would have been totally predictable.

I am still too angry to make much sense of this--

When it was first broadcast, Sheppard Smith was on Fox with his self-indulgent PC persona and I could not stomach it. I flipped over to CNN and they were just about as bad. Since I live just south of Dallas and an hour & half north of Fort Hood, I watched local coverage.

In any breaking news event this day and time, the anchors and reporters are trying to be the star instead of reporting any facts or offering any intelligent information. They are ignorant of any weapons and love to harp on anything semiautomatic so they all just keep on repeating the wrong information or misinformation over and over again like a broken record.

Even this morning on "Fox & Friends," the coverage is still half-assed.

However, we now know who will be the first recipient of Obama’s power to pardon.

What makes me angry is the inability to ask intelligent questions of people who should know. I used to work in the media (don’t flame me)— at a time when intelligence (at least in moderate measure) was something to be prized. I get so frustrated and scream at the TV —especially at Fox — when breaking news happens and nobody asks relevant questions. It’s one thing if you don’t know, but it’s another if you don’t know enough to ask.

In both my early 1960s high school and journalism classes there was 'Who, What, Where, When and How" as the 1st Amendment of reporting. You reported the facts objectively and left opinion to the columnists.

Yes, it’s possible that the fact they have even said this much indicates that there is some “larger group” involved with it.

Of course, I guess that’s true no matter how you look at it: he wasn’t just a nut, and the “larger group” was Islam. However, I bet he’s going to go for an insanity defense and the PC crowd will accept it immediately. They’re already trying to build it. I have a distinct feeling that this comment does NOT indicate that they are actively investigating links to known Islamic terrorists, nor to any underground terror cells, nor to any foreign government.

I still find it extraordinarily amazing that he is reputed to have received an extraordinary lot of extra training with handguns, but that no one ever found his intense interest in same to be peculiar, given so many other Blaring Sirens about him.
