'Clunker' data show pickup-for-pickup trades

WASHINGTON – Billed as a way for the government to put more fuel-efficient vehicles on highways, the popular $3 billion Cash for Clunkers program mostly involved swaps of old Ford or Chevrolet pickups for new ones that got only marginally better gas mileage, according to an analysis of new federal data by The Associated Press.

The single most common swap — which occurred more than 8,200 times — involved Ford F150 pickup owners who took advantage of a government rebate to trade their old trucks for new Ford F150s

Nobody should be particularly surprised by this.

These are the vehicles that keep more than 75% of our commerce rolling, and likely the best possible use of the clunker funds, if the economy is of importance.

We’ll be replacing two vehicles in the coming years. They will be Fords.

Yep, that's exactly what a friend of mine did. Old F150 for new, more efficient F150.

Another friend traded in a beater of a Ford Ranger for a brand new one.

But what's wrong with that? Great trucks, more gas efficient. Since this Cash for Clunkers debacle was going on anyhow, that was as good a use of the incentive as buying some stupid Prius that you can't haul three hunting dogs in the back of.

(that reminds me. I need to measure my F150 to see if I can get a third dog crate in the back. I may have to use one of my narrow SUV crates to make it fit. Alternatively, my oldest dog can just ride in the back seat. She's pretty much a lady of leisure now anyway.)

There have been so many posting here that they believed that what dragged down American car companies was their production of pickups and SUVs, and I could never understand where that idea would come from.

Every time that I have been to a new car dealer, the only vehicles that seemed to draw buyer interest were pickups and SUVs.

I fully agree. This proves that people at large are vastly more intelligent than government agencies.

You mean, other than the fact that it forces US taxpayers to help fund the trucks of others?

Wouldn’t a load of 2x4s look funny, even to a liberal, in the back of a smart suicide clown car?

We finally have a new house being built near us, the owner has been planning it for two years, and the area looks like a Ford truck showroom.

Funny that the news media don't see the clear impropriety of that fact!

That is exactly why I qualified my original statement.

I figured somebody would post exactly what you posted, tried to head it off but I guess I didn't make my qualification clear enough.

I'll try again: SINCE IT WAS GOING ON ANYWAY AND THE TAXPAYER MONEY WAS GOING TO BE SPENT, better it should be spent on something that is actually useful instead of a shoebox on a roller skate.

No more funny that the PRISTINE beds of two-year-old Ford F-150s.
No more funny than a Ford F-150 in Lincoln badging.

LOL! - I know another surveyor that is using his PrIOUS to haul his equipment around. It really is a laugh, because those cars have very little cargo space, and he had to remove the rear seat and store it.

Still no excuse for living off the government teat.
Money taken from some taxpayers for the benefit of others.

I think this GREAT.

I would like to see a poll of how many of these folks voted for Obama! My guess would be not very many.

We Red Necks finally can say with a smile “GOTCHA LITTLE MAN”

Well, if you want to complain about taking money from taxpayers to get stuff for others, there are things that I think are far more damaging than cash for clunkers . . . like the 'earned income tax credit', 'blighted community' buyouts . . . . . . sheesh, probably 60-75% of the entire tax system.

Get in line and take a number.

Did anyone actually think that someone who has a truck would actually trade it down to a Pious or ‘Smart’ car?

So, you’re saying that since everybody else is in line, you’ve decided to get in line, too?

Not me.
I drive a 1998 Chevy Lumina.
People at work were constantly asking me why I didn’t trade in for the CFC debacle.

It’s to be part of the problem and then bitch about a solution. Pointing out other stupid programs doesn’t make it right.

"No more funny that the PRISTINE beds of two-year-old Ford F-150s."

Pickups used in package delivery, and those used as tow vehicles, rarely show much wear. Is this a bad thing somehow?

"No more funny than a Ford F-150 in Lincoln badging."

Or a Toyota 4-runner in Lexis badging?
