Israel views arms shipment as card against Iran

Hezbollah will underscore its case against Tehran in the international community, observers said Thursday.

"Officials in Jerusalem had not dared even to dream of better timing for the capture of the vessel carrying so much arms and ammunition bound for Hezbollah," an editorial in Israel's Maariv newspaper said.

"The capture of the ship was, for Israel, like a gift from heaven."

The Israeli navy on Wednesday seized a ship carrying what it described as "hundreds of tonnes" of weapons, including rockets, grenades and ammunition, that it said was sent from Iran to the Lebanese Hezbollah militia.

A UN Security Council resolution which brought an end to the devastating 2006 war between Hezbollah and Israel demanded the disarmament of all militias in Lebanon and imposed a ban on all arms exports to them.

Iran and Hezbollah have both denied any link to the ship.

At first I thought “card” meant they were about to sent off the pitch.

A "card" is like a smoking gun, a pawn, something to be used as leverage.

More like a freaking ACT OF WAR!

It was a civilian cargo vessel, not a warship.

Yeah, a cargo vessel — carrying arms to Israel’s sworn enemy, for use against none other than Israel. That’s an act of war.

Indeed, while Iran was the supplier of arms and munitions to Hezbollah.

Breaking an embargo by a merchant ship is a classic act of war (under the Hague convention, I believe).

They should dock it outside Harbor and sink it, along with any other ships with arms on board.

To me, this story has it all wrong. It's as if they're treating the conflict as nothing more than who has the best propaganda for their argument. It's as if they're talking about a horse race, not a real struggle between a self-governing democracy and barbarians.

Despite denials, I believe the IDF succeeded in getting this shipment because of some intelligence service (theirs, ours, the UK's, I don't know).

How many other shipments have gotten past the IDF? How much has the UN allowed into south Lebanon? We don't know. But plenty of reports indicate that the amount in south Lebanon today is huge.

Finally, Iran is the biggest supporter of terrorism in the world. It's been supplying the weapons, explosives, and training to its proxies that kill Iraqis, Lebanese, Americans, Israelis, Afghans, and its own people. Iran is actively pursuing a nuclear weapon. Iran must be confronted and stopped. See this link.
