Maine voters repeal gay-marriage law

PORTLAND, Maine — Maine voters have torpedoed a state law that would have allowed gay couples to marry.

With 84 percent of the precincts reporting, gay-marriage foes had 53 percent of the vote Tuesday.

The outcome amounts to a heartbreaking defeat for the gay rights movement — particularly since it occurred in New England, the corner of the country most supportive of gay marriage.

At issue was a law passed by the Maine Legislature last spring that would have legalized same-sex marriage. The law was put on hold after conservatives launched a petition drive to repeal it in a referendum.

Gay marriage has now lost in every single state — 31 in all — in which it has been put to a popular vote. Gay-rights activists had hoped to buck that trend in Maine.

Wow, excellent news! Wish we could have voted on this in Connecticut, where gay marriage was forced upon us by an activist judge months ago.

If this isn't solid proof of judicial activism, I don't know what else could be.

And in the end, the SCOTUS will have the final say and we know that 5 of the 9 Justices will vote to overturn one of the gay marriage bans. And when one falls, they all will fall.

Earlier today, a CNN panel was touting a sea change in public opinion toward gay marriage. They were cheering and expecting big results in Maine tonight.

We don’t know that. Kennedy did go to great lengths to exclude marriage from the holding of Lawrence. However it really does all come down to him.

Yes, it is up to Kennedy and he not only wrote Lawrence, but he seems to have a wide interpretation of the Equal Protection Clause.

Gay marriage has been imposed by the courts and the liberal elites. It just lost in two Blue States. Naturally, this is going to put the Democrats on the defensive. Tamper with the institution of marriage at your political peril.

My wife and I don’t hate homosexuals, but we were proud to vote in support of Traditional Marriage and Question 1. We simply will not allow the homosexual activist to destroy our kids. The public has spoken loud and clear and we oppose this unhealthy lifestyle choice.

31-0!!!!

Can you imagine how the media would be spinning it if the situation were reversed and the gays had won 31 out of 31 times? Can you imagine the pressure there would be on the opponents of "gay marriage" to finally admit defeat and get over it?
