The Chicken Fix (Look out - here it comes!)
Wall Street Journal ^ | October 25, 2009 | Opinion Asia

And now some welcome news for a change: In a little-noticed move, the U.S. Congress tore down a barrier to imports of chicken from China last week. It's a victory for free trade and for a more rational approach to safety standards.

President Obama signed an appropriations bill Wednesday that clears the way for the imports by allowing the U.S. Department of Agriculture to conduct in China the safety inspections U.S. law requires for any country exporting food to America. The congressional move in 2007 to block funding for those regulatory steps amounted to an import ban. Now USDA will go through its normal regulatory process to open the door to Chinese imports, which could take 18 months or so.

“The only good news is that after all of the China food scares, few Americans are going to be willing to buy China raised chickens, FDA inspected or not.”

Count me in those “few.”

I bought a box of frozen tilapia from ChiCom, and it tasted like moldy dirt. The fish were probably raised in sewage water and cleaned in outhouse detritus. Blah! I now read the packaging on everything, and if I see China on the label it goes back on the shelf.

Nope....never never never going to eat anything imported from China.

I’ve called the toll free number on packages while I am in the grocery store to be sure what I am buying did not originate in China.

Don’t completely avoid shrimp. There is a thriving Gulf Coast industry of hard working Americans and it’s the best shrimp in the world.

Ask questions at the restaurant and packages. There is a seal on American Gulf Coast shrimp—”Wild American Shrimp”. Support the fishermen and America!

Chickens are OK, but a tariff on Chinese tires? The problem is the chickens need to unionize.

Go to the website and check the list of supermarkets and restaurants that carry certified Wild American Shrimp and demand from your grocery manager that they carry it. Let your voice be heard! And enjoy the shrimp!

Melamine is only part of the problem, there are numerous other toxins in the environment over there. I don’t buy any food of either uncertain national origin or from China.

"Having just returned from a chukar hunt let me say that counting on them for full time eats would set one up for lots of field time - and hungry night."

Agreed but I mentioned a few other critters. Any morning here I can pop two or three cotton tails just out of my back door. But you got the point of post I hope.
