Where have all those Obamenthusiasts who were so visible in 2008 been hiding this year? In this New Republic article Lydia DePillis seems to think that the problem is that Organizing For America has been run as a top-down organization, rather than as a bottom-up movement, giving the folks out there no sense of ownership. She asks, Can a grassroots organization run in the top-down style of a political machine really accomplish muchlet alone change the terms of debate on any given issue?
I think theres something more going on here. Many Obamenthusiasts were thrilled by the idea of putting Obama in and getting George W. Bush out. They achieved their goal a year ago. What more is left? Did these people really expend all this energy to reduce the percentage of people without health insurance? We are the change we are seeking, Obama said during the campaign. Well, the Obamenthusiasts got that change. Now they can go back to gardening or Sudoku. If this view is right, it doesnt matter much whether Organizing for America is lodged in the Democratic National Committee or not, or whether its run top-down or bottom-upthe issues DePillis considers critical. If people arent motivated to do an unnatural thingand engaging in political activity is for most people an unnatural thingthey wont do it.
It’s called ‘buyers remorse’ and this author is too stupid to see that NO ONE expected him to be a socialist since they ran like hell from that label during the campaign.
I have a good friend who owns a nail salon. All her employees were so sure Obama was going to be wonderful and give them free health care...
Now that she sees a potential $8000 ‘fine’ or tax PER EMPLOYEE to pay for it, she is not too happy. Neither are her employees who see him as a creeping communist- and they SAW what the communists did in Viet Nam, and they want no more part of it.
The author is Michael Barone and he is not stupid. JMHO
[and this author is too stupid]
Bite your tongue. Michael Barone is definitely not stupid.
AAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaauugh!!! my bad (stupid knee jerk reaction to anything i see in media)
He cried wolf too many times.
People are on to him and his con games now.
The Honeymoon effect is over.
