WASHINGTON – What's all the fuss about? After all the noise over Democrats' push for a government insurance plan to compete with private carriers, coverage numbers are finally in: Two percent.
That's the estimated share of Americans younger than 65 who'd sign up for the public option plan under the health care bill that Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., is steering toward House approval.
The underwhelming statistic is raising questions about whether the government plan will be the iron-fisted competitor that private insurers warn will shut them down or a niche operator that becomes a haven for patients with health insurance horror stories.
Some experts are wondering if lawmakers have wasted too much time arguing about the public plan, giving short shrift to basics such as ensuring that new coverage will be affordable.

We are at the doorway of the great tribulation and socialism/communism is the tactic that the devil is going to employ.
Once they get their foot in the door, there will be no going back. 2% may be the number who WANT to sign up for this, but everyone else is going to find their current insurance going belly up, so they will either sign up, too, or die when they get sick.
So why does my sickly liberal neighbor who can’t let a week go by without either she or her husband or her mother or her children going to mutiple doctors for checkups and examins and tests and then on to pharmacies for one prescription or another take great pleasure in the passage of government health care? They already plan their days around medical appointments, yet can’t seem to wait for the socialist healthcare model.
Because they major in the minors! To them, all this little stuff is what they want to have "a right" to, not caring, of course, that all that over-utilization is what's driving up most of the driven up costs!!!
Furthermore, they refuse to think about the major things until faced with the possibility of DEATH and then, cost is no object and they feel entitled to the best that money can buy to keep them, or their loved ones alive at any cost no matter who pays for it!!!
There, now... Did that help you acheive a better understanding of your sickly liberal neighbor??? They're almost all like that, along with a few so-called CONservatives!!!
I see this differently than many of my colleagues here. The CBO scores what they are told to score. The way the bill is designed, the public option will increase dramatically as employers take the penalty rather than pay the increased costs. Now the Dems have a problem. If they admit that 2% is correct, many will ask why all the trouble? If they fess up and tell the truth, folks will know they are lying to us about keeping their own doctors. I was “in charge” of resident education in Hematology and Medical Oncology for close to 30 years. When I was a house staff officer, we wore white coats, had clean hair, wore ties and shoes. This crop wears sloppy scrubs even when they are not in the OR or on call and sandals. Their personal grooming looks terrible. They sleep during conferences. I know every generation says the next is a “mess” but believe me, the new crop is not the same as the old already. We (my generation) did Medicine as a vocation). I know somebody is going to write a diatribe against doctors. I can list all the complaints. However, soon they will have good reason to complain. Somebody (a lefty) is going to reply we have a terrible system. In fact, we are #37 according to the WHO. Go to the WHO report and read what criteria they used to calculate the scores. Then honestly tell me they are not a joke! Then look at responsiveness scores and we are the best. Read the Stanford study to show we are the best. However, most talented young folks will not go into medicine, not because of the money, but because we have a terrible problem with a Neanderthal like Nancy Pelosi talking down to us.
I couldn’t find one thing to disagree with what you wrote! Especially about that sick joke called the World Health Organization!!!
This ponzi scheme for 2% of the so called uncovered is nothing but a redistribution of our wealth/income into the SEIU Thugs pockets and probably members of Congress with back doors open to those who will benefit from this fiasco.
AP has had some good and interesting financial articles since this summer in my local fishwrap and on Yahoo.
