WaPo: 'Now a Two-Person Race Between Hoffman and Democrat Bill Owens With Scozzafava Fading Badly'
NewsBusters ^ | October 24, 2009 | P.J. Gladnick

Posted on 10/27/2009 6:16:53 AM PDT by PJ-Comix

Chris Cillizza at the Washington Post has written a story in his Morning Fix political news analysis that is sure to cause conniption fits over at the Daily Kos which endorsed "Republican" Dede Scozzafava in the New York 23rd CD race that has now grabbed the attention of the political world. The political news that Cillizza has reported looks great for Conservative Doug Hoffman, bad for Scozzafava, and very depressing for the Daily Kos (and Newt Gingrich):

The Iowa caucuses may be more than two years from now but a series of moves by potential Republican presidential contenders has turned a special election in New York's 23rd district into an early test of conservative bona fides.

In the last week three GOPers with an eye on 2012 -- former House speaker Newt Gingrich (Ga.), Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and former Alaska governor Sarah Palin -- have weighed in on the race with Tpaw and Palin throwing their support behind Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman and Gingrich endorsing state Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava.

(Polling and conversations with those close to the contest on both sides suggest it is now a two-person race between Hoffman and Democrat Bill Owens with Scozzafava fading badly.)

I won't be a bit surprised this week to see the Daily Kos switch its endorsement from Scozzafava to the Democrat candidate. The surest sign that they don't believe their own poll showing Hoffman lagging far back. Oh, and thank you, Daily Kos, for giving the kiss of death to Scozzafava's chances with your endorsement of her.

If she were really a Republican, she would withdraw today. But, since she has RINO tendencies, she will do a McCain and throw her support to the Democrat.

I’m so busy with Virginia I haven’t had time to follow this. Why are they having a special election? Is this to replace Gillibrand?

If she throws her support to the Dem,
she’ll probably lose at least 30% of it to Hoffman, if not more.

If Scozzafava continues to fade, that should send shockwaves through the RNC/GOP leadership.

Alas, I doubt that it will. The RNC/GOP leadership will continue their big-tent-ism and left-leaning moderate-ism.

They will continue the same and expect a different result.

No good, I want to see the liberal votes divided between Owens and Scozzafava.

The vacancy is because person who held the seat, John McHugh, was appointed as Sec. of the Army.

And a harbinger of next summer -- the GOP had better understand they need to support the conservative candidate in the primaries, otherwise, they will see this indy-run going on all over the country come November, to the party-bigwigs detriment.

Is this to replace Gillibrand?

No, it is to replace McHugh, one of the eight "Republican" congressmen who supported Obama's bailout (Emergency Economic Stabilization Act) and as a result was rewarded with being named Secretary of the Army.

But there is more. By playing ball with Obama, McHugh's appointment as Secretary of the Army freed up a Republican seat that the Democrats felt was winnable in the ensuing special election. This, of course would increase their majority in the House.

McHugh, knowing all of this, was interested in one thing ---HIMSELF!

Good riddance.

Tim Pawlenty’s belated endorsement of Hoffman is very telling.
He could not afford to let Sarah get the credit should Hoffman win. Sarah is the conservative leader now. It certainly isn’t Newt.

It is time for Dede to withdraw from the race, and pledge her support to Hoffman, IMO. If not, the Republicans will have six losses instead of five in traditional Republican strongholds.

How long will it take the Republicans to connect the dots?

After realizing yesterday how close I live (Burlington VT is only 45 minutes driving/ferry from Plattsburg, NY which is part of this district) I am going to head on over toward the weekend to see what I can do to help, in addition to having made a campaign contribution, (and for the 1st time EVER in my 66 years become directly involved in a campaign) as I think this is important in more ways than one.

PLEASE anyone who can do anything to support, and believe in sending a message to the Newts, RNC and other RINO's, its time to stand up and be counted.

Its time to stop talking the talk and start walking the walk, my fellow Freepers.

I realize this is but one small election in upstate NY, but could send ripples and repercussions Nationwide and would prove "we" CAN affect the outcome of local elections and help take back Congress (with CONSERVATIVES) next year and be a springboard for 2012.

Thanks!

If he can pull it off....I think it will signal a coming tidal wave which will sweep the country with RINO’s and ‘progressives’ directly in its path.

I would come if I could. I agree that personal involvement will be critical. I went to Nevada last year and knocked on a thousand doors for Sarah Palin. Even though we lost, it got me fired up like never before, so I will be doing it again at every important election. Working the ground game is a lot more enjoyable than it sounds.

How long will it take the Republicans to connect the dots?

I think for the most part, Republicans know what's going on.

Most Republicans, though, will govern as far to the left as the electorate will let them. They're also big on cartels and big business. They're NOT opposed to big government. They simply want the taxes funneled into businesses that donate to their campaign coffers.

With the Democrats making a massive power grab and the economy tanking, the Republicans will pick up seats if they do nothing at all. So, this election with Scozzafava is a test. How far left can the Republicans move and still win? Scozzafava is an all in chips bet, where the Republicans are saying, "Okay guys, we're throwing the most leftist candidate out there that we can find. Will voter dissatisfaction with the Dems allow us to pick up the seat anyway?" At the Federal level, we really have a bunch of one worlder Republicrats and Demicans. They don't want voters to have a choice. Much like the Bush-Clinton election, when NAFTA was an issue, you ended up with two candidates who supported it, and it was passed unconstitutionally (NAFTA was a treaty, requiring 2/3rds vote to pass, but was passed on a simple majority), you have two candidates who want to pass massive tax increases in the form of a global warming bill, take over the health care industry, and despite the fact that many voters do not want these things, the Washington power elite wants to make sure that those voters have no choice.

I think that you are correct. I have never been comfortable with Republicans, having been born and raised a Democrat. Although I have been voting Republican since Goldwater ran against Lyndon Johnson. The "checked pants" Republicans, sometimes known as "Rockefeller" Republicans fit the left model you mentioned.

I like Republicans like Sarah Palin, Hoffman, and Reagan.

As they also say, "you know you are over the target when you start getting flak", and that is, if you see a radical departure from Owens' TV and Radio and direct mail strategy into hammering Hoffman in the last few days (which means from NOW) it will betray their otherwise conceiled tactics and show to us all that their internal polling shows HER as a non-issue, and HIM coming up and biting the Democrat's ass.

I am watching for that very closely. That will speak volumes.

Also, any kinds of push polls with callers that sound like they are targeting possible Hoffman voters with a script to push them toward Owens will also show that it is down to a Democrat-Conservative battle, with the RINO knocked to the curb.

Watch, y'all, for these signs. 48 hour reporting of cash coffers is also a good sign. Looks like Hoffman is moving up aggressively in that regard (notwithstanding the Jackass Stupid Party in D.C., aka NRCC, trying funnel in GOBS of bucks at the last minute to save that RINO).

Sideways-topic, PJ, isn't the Club For Growth headed by Grover Norquist, Gingrich's big-time guy back during the Contract days?? Did I miss a split along the way, has Gingrich disavowed Norquist publicly at some point? (Irrelevant to the issue/race, but I'm curious is all).

Tim Pawlenty’s belated endorsement of Hoffman is very telling.

It is also very telling that in almost all media accounts (in fact, every one that I've seen) Pawlenty is being named first or ahead of Palin. Now that they've failed to stop it, the MSM are going to do their best to help Pawlenty and the GOP insiders co-opt this situation for their benefit...
