Here is a video, released today by the Washington State DOT, of a computer simulation of what is expected to happen if a magnitude 7.0 quake hits the area near downtown Seattle.....
This video focuses on the effects such a quake would have on the Alaskan Way Viaduct and the seawall on the waterfront. Make no mistake about it...this video is designed to scare the heck out of anyone who uses the viaduct. Why release it? According the the WSDOT, a private citizen, name withheld, made a public disclosure request through the FOIA.
Just recently, the City of Seattle and the State of Washington made agreements to replace the Viaduct with a deep-bore tunnel. Several other replacements were discussed for several years following the 1989 'World Series' quake in Oakland/San Francisco, and especially following the 2001 Nisqually quake near Seattle.
There are many people in the Seattle area that are questioning why the deep-bore tunnel was the option chosen. It is the most expensive of all the options looked at and will certainly cause tax increases for Seattle residents as well as possible state tax increases. There are rumors and suspicions that several politicians in the area "had the fix in" for the tunnel as it would funnel huge sums of money to unions, who would then throw their support behind politicians who sent the money their way.
Yes, it's a scary video, made more scary by the certainty that the Alaskan Way Viaduct WILL collapse in the case of a massive quake.
The problem is...why won't they make a video of what'll happen to a tunnel in a quake? A tunnel in a known fault zone...BELOW SEA LEVEL.
Makes yopu wonder what the politicians are thinking...or even if they are thinking at all.
I was shocked when I heard Seattle went for it’s own Big Dig.
Yet another reason I’m glad I’m moving to Kentucky.
Eastern Kentucky or western Kentucky?
You’d think they’d be more worried about that volcano on their doorstep.
Ping!
Seattle politics are notoriously corrupt and left wing. The King County (Seattle) Dems were the ones who stole the first election of Gov. Fraudoire in the second manual recount, amid masses of new magic ballots showing up out of the blue during the recount.
Central. :)
Yep, that would be an epic event.
