The hundreds of civil war gravestones in Culpeper cemetery tell of the towns bloody history. Halfway between the opposing capitals of Richmond and Washington, it saw more battles than anywhere else in the United States. Today this town in the foothills of Virginias Blue Ridge mountains is a battlefield of a different kind.
In 10 days time Virginia, which last November voted for a Democratic presidential candidate for the first time since 1964, goes to the polls for a governor in the first electoral test of the Obama presidency.
This contest between Bob McDonnell, a Republican, and Creigh Deeds, a Democrat, is seen as a key to next years mid-term elections.
With polls showing Barack Obamas popularity falling faster than any president for the past 50 years during the first year in office, the prospect in Virginia is not looking good for the Democrats.
McDonnell, 55, a former state attorney-general, is 12 points ahead in the polls. Many independents who turned out for Obama last year say they will stay at home. Republicans, angry about the economy and big government, threaten to turn out in large numbers.
In the Raven Hill coffee bar people sit at laptops, surfing the internet in a hunt for work. Shirley Goinns, 58, lost her job as an administrative assistant in a building firm six months ago and her daughter was laid off a month later. Were devastated right now, she said. And all we see is the government bailing out big business.
The downturn is the worst since the depression of the 1930s; unemployment rose to a 26-year high of 9.8% last month. McDonnell is capitalising on this with a New Job, New Virginia tour, which on Thursday saw him in Culpeper visiting a building company.

After “Cap and Trade” or “ration and tax”, there should never be another Democrap election anywhere in the country. Their name should join the trash heep with their allies the Communist, Socialist, Marxist, Progressives, Liberals, Elitists.
Obama is a clown. Even sensible people who were wowed by him realize this now.
And with all those votes the Dems still can't win?
LOL. I think Independents are conservative people like me who can no longer stomach calling themselves Republican. Republican today = equals big government, light. (And, people like John McCain and Lindsey Graham, barf!)
Why are British reporters sometimes so clueless about American elections? All this guy had to do was do an internet search, and he'd have find out that the pols have independents backing McDonnell by a massive 3 to 1.

Far from independents saying they will stay home, independents are determined to turn out en masse and vote for the Republicans McDonnell, out of frustration and disillusionment with 0bama.
If RATS win NJ, it will be because of the fraud.
Wasn't Culpeper the name of the police chief played by Spencer Tracy in It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World?
I disagree, clowns are, for the most part funny. O'buffoon is just plain scary and dangerous.
Interesting choice of words here:
“Many independents who turned out for Obama last year say they will stay at home. Republicans, angry about the economy and big government, threaten to turn out in large numbers.”
So Republicans are THREATENING, but Independents “say”.

Now THAT was funny!
Hopefully this will come true ... I always worry about Stalin’s, “it’s not who votes, but who counts the votes.”
Stay vigilant VA.
I'm afraid you might be right. These are basically fence sitters. They are kidding nobody. They are stuck with egg on their face and probably will just stay home rather than try to save America. Way before the elections I said that I believed that 2/3 of Americans are brain dead. We might have gained a but the 1/3 that never woke up combined with the voter fraud of the King Obama and his corrupt machine, 2010 is going to be tough. Even if we manage to make gains they will be not enough to stop the erosion of America.
All those confederate ghosts have figured out that this is not your great grandfather’s Democratic party, they vote Republican or Libertarian now.

God help anyone who tries to steal an election now, after we've learned about ACORN and their tricks. The backlash will be swift and terrible.
You folks will have volunteer "poll watchers" at all the voting locations, right?
