BOSTON - A pharmacy college graduate conspired with two other men on a terror plot to kill two prominent U.S. politicians and carry out a holy war by attacking shoppers in U.S. malls and American troops in Iraq, prosecutors said Wednesday.
But their plans in which the men used code words like "peanut butter and jelly" for fighting in Somalia and "culinary school" for terrorist camps were thwarted in part when they could not find training and were unable to buy automatic weapons, authorities said.
Tarek Mehanna worked with the men from 2001 to May 2008 on the conspiracy to "kill, kidnap, maim or injure" soldiers and two politicians who were members of the executive branch but are no longer in office, authorities said, refusing to identify the politicians. Mehanna was arrested Wednesday morning at his parents' home in Sudbury, an upscale suburb 20 miles west of Boston.
Prosecutors said the 27-year-old Mehanna a graduate of the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in Boston, where his father is a professor conspired with two other men: Ahmad Abousamra, who authorities say is now in Syria, and an unnamed man, who is cooperating with authorities in the investigation.

When all the info comes out, I'll bet that the feds were alerted when these terrorists tried to buy machine guns from an FFL dealer or tried to get someone to buy them and convert them to fully automatic weapons.

Massachusetts Man Charged with Conspiracy to Provide Material Support to Terrorists
BOSTONA Sudbury, Mass., man was charged today in federal court with conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists.
Acting U.S. Attorney Michael K. Loucks and Warren T. Bamford, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI - Boston Field Division, announced today that Tarek Mehanna, 27, of 6 Fairhaven Circle, Sudbury, Mass., was charged in a complaint with conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists.
The complaint alleges that, beginning in or about 2001 and continuing until in or about May 2008, Mehanna conspired with Ahmad Abousamra, and others to provide material support and resources for use in carrying out a conspiracy to kill, kidnap, maim or injure persons or damage property in a foreign country and extraterritorial homicide of a U.S. national.
Specifically, the complaint affidavit alleges that Mehanna and coconspirators discussed their desire to participate in violent jihad against American interests and that they would talk about fighting jihad and their desire to die on the battlefield. The complaint further alleges that the coconspirators attempted to radicalize others and inspire each other by, among other things, watching and distributing jihadi videos. It is alleged that, among other things, Mehanna and two of his associates traveled to the Middle East in February 2004, seeking military-type training at a terrorist training camp that would prepare them for armed jihad against U.S. interests, including U.S. and allied forces in Iraq. The complaint also alleges that one of Mehannas coconspirators made two similar trips to Pakistan in 2002.
According to the complaint affidavit, Mehanna and the coconspirators had multiple conversations about obtaining automatic weapons and randomly shooting people in a shopping mall, and that the conversations went so far as to discuss the logistics of a mall attack, including coordination, weapons needed and the possibility of attacking emergency responders. It is alleged that the plan was ultimately abandoned, because of their inability to obtain the automatic weapons they deemed necessary to effectively carry out the attacks.
Mehanna was previously indicted in January 2009 for making false statements to members of the Joint Terrorism Task Force of the FBI in connection with a terrorism investigation.
If convicted on the material support charge, Mehanna faces up to 15 years in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine.
The case was investigated by the FBIs Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) members: Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Customs Border Protection, Massachusetts State Police and the Lowell Police Department, in addition to other members of the FBIs Joint Terrorism Task Force. The JTTF includes officers and agents from a number of other federal, state and local law enforcement agencies. It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jeffrey Auerhahn and Aloke S. Chakravarty of Louckss Anti-Terrorism and National Security Unit.
The details contained in the complaint are allegations. The defendant is presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
Tarek Mehanna sounds Mennonite to me. No wait...
Why oh why do they all have to be from Massachusetts?
There is a huge mosque over in that area just off U.S. Route 20 that is a hotbed of hotheads...just like this Mahanna pig.

Mass. terror suspect taught kids at Muslim school

The Massachusetts man charged with conspiring in a terror plot has been a middle school math and religion teacher at a Muslim school in Worcester.
Colleagues at the Alhuda Academy say they cannot believe the allegations against Tarek Mehanna (TEH’-rek meh-HAH’-nah), who was arrested Wednesday and charged in conspiring to support terrorism. They say he was a sweet guy and loved by his students.
But prosecutors say Mehanna and his associates sought training at terrorist camps and discussed plans to target U.S. troops in Iraq and two politicians and to randomly shoot shoppers at U.S. malls.

Yep, and thanks for posting that up Brown Deer.
I appreciate it.
We’re watching the local news about this, and it turns out the man is a teacher at a Muslim school in Worcester. I’m wondering if it’s the school at the mosque on East Mountain St. in Worcester. Make you wonder what he’s teaching the kids.
Ah, OK, I didn’t read your post before my comment. I was wondering if it was the Alhuda Academy.

“Arrested Blogger Identified: Tarek Mehanna
UPDATE 10/21/2009: Mehanna arrested again! This time for plotting terror on US soil.”
SNIPPET: “——Begin original post——
The al Qaeda supporter and blogger arrested by the FBI earlier this week has been identified as Tarek Mehanna. Mehanna was arrested as he attempted to leave the country on charges that he had lied to the FBI about prior knowledge of another Muslim blogger’s, Daniel “Al-Jughaifi” Maldanado, plans to travel from Egypt to Somalia to join the jihad. Maldanado is now in federal prison after being convicted of receiving specialized weapons training from an al Qaeda linked group in Somalia.
Like clockwork, Mehanna’s family defends him as a nice boy who just completed his graduate work to become a pharmacist. What his family may or may not know is that Mehanna goes by the online handle “Abu Sayaba” and runs the “Iskandari” website which is devoted to promoting the Salafi ideology.
For instance, Tarek “Abu Sayaba” Mehanna has, literally, dozens of posts recounting the words of Abdullah Azzam, the intellectual backbone of al Qaeda. Also among his favorite authors are Sayyid Qutb.
In addition to friends like Maldanado who has been convicted on terrorism related charges, Mehanna’s online buddies include:
Shades of Swords, who glorifies the executed Bali bombers as martyrs.
Inshallahshaheed, who we have an entire category devoted to and who claims he personally doesn’t go off to fight the jihad because “it’s hard” and who recently has set up his own media division in support of terrorist organizations.
Jihad Fields Are Calling, who’s name pretty much sums it up.
And so on and so forth. In other words, the people he associated himself with online are either a) actively engaged in violent jihad; or b) actively engaged in supporting violent jihad through the distribution of terrorist propaganda.
You can bet that the FBI arrest on relatively minor charges was taken because there was a reasonable fear that Mehanna was leaving the country to join or further support the jihad himself. His friend Maldanado had also left the country to pursue “religious studies” in Egypt, but ended up in an al Qaeda linked training camp in Somalia.
If any one finds a picture of him, please pass it along. Thanks to Miss Kelly.

“ANOTHER CYBERSPACE/MEATSPACE CONVERGENCE”
SNIPPET: “Rusty Shackelford, PhD., credits Samir Khan with the first report of the arrest of Abu Sayaba, proprietor of the “iskandrani” blog, by the FBI in Boston. This corresponds to the arrest of Tarek Mehanna, age 26, on charges of lying to FBI agents when questioned two years ago about his friend and now-convicted terrorist Daniel Joseph Maldonado. Mehanna was about to leave the USA for Saudi Arabia, which evidently prompted the unsealing of his indictment.”

I kept Mr. Mehanna’s attorney’s admonishment to remember that his client was innocent until proven guilty in mind. I also know that the government is required to prove its allegations in open court and I am perfectly willing to wait.”
SNIPPET: “About “Culinary School” and “Peanut Butter and Jelly”: These were the code phrases used by Maldonaldo and Mehanna when Maldonaldo called Mehanna from Somalia in early December 2006. “Making a PB & J” meant “fighting the jihad”.

The bullets hit your hearts like the stings of a bee
You fall on your face as all you can see,
Are the Gardens so wide when youre put in the ground
Youve been searching for years and now you have found,
The Ultimate Prize, so sacred, so sweet
Your bargain with your Lord is finally complete,
Because you are all martyrs without fear or grief
Who gave all you had for your precious belief,
You promised Him your souls and He promised you much more
Now you can enjoy what Hes kept in store,
An endless reward for those who stood by
The covenant they made that towards death they would fly,
While graves burn the sinners and squeeze them so tight
Youre shown your places in the Garden, so spacious and bright,
On the Day when Great Terror shall steal all their words
Your souls will rest in the hearts of green birds,
Under the Great Throne with beauty beyond measure
At you ar-Rahmaan laughs, expressing His Pleasure,
Sufficient is this as a heavenly prize
But prepared for you is that never before seen by the eyes,
On your head is placed a crown, one jewel of which is worth
More than all of the jewels contained in this Earth,
You are brought to a gathering with companions so beautiful
The Prophets, the righteous and those who were truthful,
Al-Firdaws, where those of the Right Hand shall meet
Where the soil is white musk, so smooth and so sweet,
You scoop up a handful and throw it in the air
You are relaxed by the rivers flowing everywhere,
Water, milk and honey gushing forth non-stop
So thick and delicious you want to devour each drop,
You drink so much you almost end up falling
Into the flowing current, then you hear voices calling,
You turn and behold! The voices are singing
Coming from Maidens so fair and enchanting,
These are the Hoorees with round and firm chests
Pure untouched virgins, theyre better than the best,
Seventy-two in all, with large eyes of dark hue
Each one created especially for you,
They call out your name asking where you are
But to their disappointment, from the battles you are far,
Your heart is intoxicated by the pleasures of this life
Fear (of death) has wounded your manhood like a sharp knife,
A knife sharpened by the callers to Hells every door
Who pulled the sword from your hand and threw it to the floor,
And given you women, children and money instead
Convincing you this is better than ending up dead,
But no! They are alive, rejoicing and provided for!
When asked what they desire, they will answer no more!
So be from the cream of this heavenly crop!
Shake off your fear and let your doubts drop!
Pick up the sword and grab your horses reins tight!
Throw off your armor and jump into the fight!
Make your path be none other than Islaams high peak
Whose mountain is climbled by making death what you seek!

SNIPPET: “The Sudbury man accused of terrorism - who still lives at home with his parents - wanted to gun down mall shoppers in a plot inspired by the 2002 Beltway sniper attacks, according to court records connected to todays arrest.
The 27-year-old also aimed to kill two members of the executive branch of the government, records state.
But Tarek Mehanna, of 6 Fairhaven Circle, could never obtain the guns he desired to carry out his twisted attack.”

Maldonado, 28, pleaded guilty in April to training with al-Qaida in East Africa. He is the first American charged with joining the terrorist organization in Somalia. The charge carried a maximum prison sentence of 10 years and a fine up to $250,000.
He admitted his association with terrorists in exchange for no further prosecution by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Houston. Maldonado came to the attention of federal investigators in late 2005 while his family was living in a southwest Houston apartment.”

Speaking of Somalis :
FEBRUARY 13, 2002 : (MEMPHIS : WMD INQUIRY BY SOMALI WITH A NIGERIAN VISA) Federal and local authorities are investigating a man who approached a University of Memphis professor last week seeking information about weapons of mass destruction. The professor, who wished to remain anonymous, said a man of Middle Eastern descent approached him while he was in his office Feb. 13 and asked for a crash course in the physics that deals with mass destruction.
In return, the man told the professor he would pay him money for the requested information. He told me that money was no object, and that he had plenty of it, said the professor. The professor said the bizarre nature of the mans inquiry and inconsistencies the man gave about his background prompted him to notify Federal authorities while the man sat in his office.
The ...[FBI]... then informed U of M police , who found the man still sitting in the office when they made the scene. Bruce Harber, director of public safety at The U of M, said the man was compliant during questioning and supplied officers with a ...[TN]...drivers license and a work visa. However, Harber said the man gave conflicting statements about background information and how he got to the U of M campus. Police then contacted...[INS]... to confirm his background. INS verified that the information was valid and released the man.
Authorities would only identify the man as a Somalian citizen carrying a visa issued from Nigeria who is currently living in Memphis. ... The man is not a student at The U of M.-——— FBI investigating mass destruction inquiry

Neighbors, Friends Surprised At Terror Arrest

BOSTON — People who know the friendly Muslim family that has lived in Sudbury for the past six or seven years, where the mother even provides day care out of the home, simply cannot believe it.
Tarek Mehanna, 27, the son of a well-liked Boston pharmacology professor, was arrested by federal officials at his parents’ sumptuous suburban home Wednesday, accused of lying about trips to the Middle East to seek terrorist training and plotting to attack Americans in a U.S. shopping mall.
At his federal court appearance on the charges, Mehanna briefly refused to stand for the judge and tossed a chair to the floor. His father said his son is upset by the accusations.
“My son is very nervous, because that is all fabrication in his eyes,” his father Ahmed Mehanna said.
“He is a very good guy. He’s very innocent,” Mehanna’s mother Saoud said.

“WHEN IDEOLOGUES (PLAN TO) ATTACK”
Author: Marisa Urgo
SNIPPET: “Today, the FBI arrested for a second time Tarek Mehanna, a 27 year old Massachusetts man. This time Mehanna was arrested on various terrorism-related charges associated with a plot to attack shopping malls. Mehanna’s plot appears to have been more “aspirational” rather than operational.
However, the Mehanna arrest is significant, because he was a member of a prominent circle of young Salafist-Jihadists living in the United States. His blog was primarily dedicated to Salafist-Jihadist thought, and it was regularly linked back on by other members of the circle. Those members remain very active online, blogging and sharing jihadi media. They are for the most part the virtual epicenter of Salafist-Jihadism in the United States.”

“The government’s allegations against Tarek Mehanna”
By DAVEED GARTENSTEIN-ROSS
October 23, 2009 10:20 PM
SNIPPET: “On Wednesday, Tarek Mehanna of Sudbury, Mass., was charged in federal court with conspiring to provide material support to terrorists. Well likely be able to learn a significant amount about his ideological leanings, motivations, and radicalization, as Mehanna kept a fascinating blog; similarly, Mehannas friend and ideological cohort Daniel Maldonado kept a blog that yielded some important insights into his own radicalization. This article is concerned not with Mehannas radicalization, however, but with what authorities have alleged in the present case.
Key players. There are five individuals who play significant roles in the affidavit in support of a criminal complaint filed by FBI Special Agent Heidi L. Williams (all page numbers in the following analysis refer to her affidavit). Tarek Mehanna is the accused in this case, a 27-year-old pharmacist from Massachusetts. Ahmed Abousamra is a 28-year-old who grew up in the Greater Boston area, whose father is described by the Boston Globe as prominent doctor and Muslim community leader. Daniel Maldonado is a friend of Mehanna and Abousamra who pled guilty two years ago to undergoing terrorist training in Somalia. CW2 is a cooperating witness who had known Mehanna for 15-20 years and was originally part of the conspiracy, but started cooperating with the government in 2006. Individual A is a white convert to Islam who worked as a teacher in an Islamic School in California, and had received religious training in Yemen, and had also attended a terrorist training camp (18).
Timeline of events. The criminal complaint is not written in chronological order. This section reconstructs the timeline of significant events alleged by the government. (It leaves out certain less consequential allegations, including some of those related to the false statements charges.) For Mehanna and Abousamra, it is a frustrating tale of traveling the world in search of jihad, but coming up empty-handed.”

“UNDERSTANDING TEREK MEHANNA”
SNIPPET: “What is important to understand about Terek Mehanna is how his online activities - operating his own website, translating key jihadi texts in to English, and distributing videos - were manifestations of his underlying ambition to eventually participate in real-world terrorism, an ambition which is amply demonstrated by the activities described in the criminal complaint against him.”
