A 27-year-old man from Sudbury has been arrested on charges he planned terrorism attacks inside and outside the United States, according to a spokeswoman for Acting U.S. Attorney Michael K. Loucks.
The man was identified as Tarek Mehanna, who was arrested in November of last year for allegedly lying to authorities about a man who trained with al Qaida, federal officials tell the Herald.
Loucks and Warren T. Bamford, special-agent-in-charge of the Boston FBI field office, have called a 10 a.m. press conference to discuss the arrest.
The announcement will be made at the federal courthouse in South Boston.

Anybody near a TV who can post info from the 10am news conference, which I assume is under way?
The plot included plans to fire at emergency responders, but was abandoned because the men could not obtain the weapons.
Prosecutors also allege the men discussed participating in violent Jihad against American interests and their desire to die on the battlefield. The crimes are alleged to have taken place between 2001 and 2008.

27-year-old man from Sudbury has been arrested on charges he planned terrorism attacks inside and outside the United States, including a plot to use automatic weapons to open fire at shoppers and emergency responders in shopping mall attacks, federal prosecutors said today.
Tarek Mehannah, of 6 Fairhaven Circle, is accused of conspiring with Ahmab Abousamra and others to obtain the automatic weapons needed to carry out a mall ambush in which they planned to open fire at random, said Acting U.S. Attorney Michael K. Loucks.
Congrats to our intel folks who appear to have discovered a treasure trove of leads on domestic AQ. Now how long until Eric Holder prosecutes them?
2 foiled 9/11 attacks this year and now this.
People should be as shocked by this as by when it gets through the net.
Only reacting in a big way when it actually gets through is kind of schizo. If it matters that much then, it matters that much now.
Perhaps it is just me, but there seems to be a lot of reporting of terrorist arrests lately via MSM.
When Bush was in office we really had to dig to find out things or if something did surface CAIR was right there charging racism.
Is this MSM reporting a strategy for the elections in 2012? Look how many prevented attacks during the last 4 years.
or
Is this an actual increase in noise?
The plans were “abandoned because the men could not obtain the weapons...”
Even if they were non-citizens with criminal records they did not try very hard if they could not come up with at least some rifles and shotguns. Maybe they were holding out for full auto but perhaps they enjoyed talking and planning more than doing.
Pesky Boston Irish again ?
I wonder what synagogue he belongs to.

Oh dang. Somebody else thinking the same thing.
Obviously another radical Amish.
Sudbury. That’s the next town over from my hometown. I’d have figured Brookline or Cambridge... but I guess this proves they’re everywhere.
Great these are being caught, but I am really concerned something’s going to slip through as our enemies become convinced we’re not as serious about defending the homeland as we once were.
Another. Effing. muslim.
They were shopping for full autos but could only get handguns.....
That’s one of the poshest suburbs — they can’t claim that poverty made this guy a jihadist apparently.
Well, at least the guy was plotting to take out people in perhaps the most liberal state in the Union.
Massachusetts is such a fitting place for a Muslim bomber to take out. I hope you liberals there start worrying about these crazies.
Massachusetts is fortunate that people in our FBI are still watching over them. May God bless those whose duty is to look over us, despite our idiocy.
