(CNSNews.com) - The U.S. Department of Justice is refusing to allow the town of Kinston, N.C., to hold nonpartisan local elections on the grounds that African Americans cannot win election without being listed as Democrats on the ballot.
In a letter sent Saturday by to Kinston City Attorney James P. Cauley III, the Justice Department stated: “Removing the partisan cue in municipal elections will, in all likelihood, eliminate the single factor that allows black candidates to be elected to office.”
The department Tuesday also refused to answer questions from CNSNews.com about the letter.

Our local talk radio was all over this yesterday. The town is majority black (60%) and voted overwhelmingly for non partisan elections so this would seem to be the justice department telling those blacks who voted for this that they’re too stupid to be allowed to decide how they want to conduct their own elections.

And having been to Kinston, I have no doubt that they require this to vote for their masters of pie.
Obama is giving them irrefutable evidence for reaching such conclusion.
It's certainly yet another example of federal overreach under the Obama administration. Imagine if Bush had done this.

Yes, it is true. The blacks in Kinston have been labeled as too stupid to remember a black democrat candidate they should be voting for. So much for being color blind is right as it always is the blacks who want to see blacks and get whatever hand-out they can in Kinston. ...this kind of thing has been going on for a while in NC...we have one DOJ/Court-ordered congressional district that’s laid out specifically to ensure a black Congressman...it’s over 60 miles long and some places only a mile wide....what DOJ did in Kinston was racial gerrymandering...but what else can we expect from a black Attorney General?

Don't use Bush for an example. His justice department circumvented state sovereignty by sending in his thugs to arrest medical pot smokers despite the state legalizing it. Right or wrong, the state made a decision that only affected folks within their borders and Bush poked his nose into it. Wrong is wrong no matter what party you belong to. He should have been the example, but he let us all down.

Non partisan elections are common in other parts of the country. Will the federal government somehow declare they are no longer valid? When they can use their authority like that it is yet another sign of danger.
After the 1990 census determined that North Carolina was 22 percent black, the state's redistricting created a black-majority congressional district. President George H.W. Bush's Justice Department deemed this insufficient under the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Hence the creation of North Carolina's 12th District, which slithers 160 miles down Interstate 85.
