NYS: drill, baby, drill!
NY Post ^ | Oct. 20, 2009 | MAX SCHULZ

The Paterson administra tion has finally given a green light to proposed drilling in the Marcellus Shale, considered by many to be the nation's largest natural-gas reservoir. Covering several states and extending more than 600 miles, the basin may contain as much as six decades' worth of US natural-gas needs.

Drilling is already under way in Pennsylvania and other Marcellus states. Well over a year ago, Gov. Paterson put energy production on hold here at home so regulators could study the issue. This delay satisfied the demands of anti-drilling greens, but it denied the Empire State's economy a much-needed boost.

So let's give Paterson credit, then, that his team's long-anticipated draft environmental review comes down on the side of natural-gas drilling in New York.

More than that, Paterson has rebuffed extreme environmentalists' demands for a ban on drilling in the New York City watershed. That's a real accomplishment, since one of the main groups calling for such a ban, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s Riverkeeper, boasted in August about helping shape the state study.

Paterson's report shoots down alarmist green claims that drilling in the watershed puts the city's water supply at risk. Instead it insists on sensible environmental regulations specifically tailored to hydraulic fracturing drilling -- such as extensive testing of water wells near drilling sites, disclosure of which chemicals are used to extract gas buried deep underground and strict plans for wastewater disposal.

It also demands that extra care be taken for drilling in the watershed and establishes buffer zones around its reservoirs and aqueducts. Reasonable enough. In all, the Paterson review shows that energy production and environmental protection need not be mutually exclusive.

This is good news, given the perilous state of the New York economy. A drilling boom in the New York portion of the Marcellus Shale...

There have been shyster lawyers going to various land owners here in the Finger Lakes for the last few years trying to get landowners to sign over their rights.

Watch the other hand, as they say in magic. DEC has enacted a set of drilling rules and safeguards that most charitably can be called ‘draconian’. And they’re bragging about them.

Cap and Trade oughta fix this windfall for the nation.

What's gonna happen when natty gas prices start to fall thanks to a healthy supply? The government is going to take it in the form of taxes.

We can't have energy prices falling and standard's of living going up. That would suggest that Americans are exceptional in the world.

(my apologies for the cynicism)

Next hurdle will be the lawsuits from environmental companies over hydraulic fracturing of the wells. Each well requires millions of gallons of freshwater to be pumped into the ground to fracture the rock to make it productive. About 20% of it usually comes back but the rest stays in the ground. The lawsuits will involve the use of the water and where to dispose of the frac water that is produced.

Exactly, and Patterson knows this. This will be tied up by the Enviro-moonbats for years.

I guess the usual quip about blind squirrels or hogs finding nuts would be totally out of line, right???? :-)

The guy may be blind but apparently he ain't totally stoopid, either. Knows precisely *how* to really get under the skin of "those" who threw 'em under the bus. Great strategy if I must say so, myself.

Be awfully nice seeing more of this from other scorned 'Rat pols Such behavior might even be misconstrued as patriotic. LOL

I seriously doubt that the rats in the U.S. Senate are that stupid. IMHO, there won't be a treaty, or a bill that passes both Houses. That still leaves the EPA and the stupid SCOTUS decision that CO2 is a pollutant. Mother nature's provision of global cooling is better late than never. They will bring another case to SCOTUS, IMHO.

I could see if this seat was in NYC, a RINO might be the best you could hope for. But this is upstate NY.

It's a national election, and NY will drill for gas. That's why I pinged all of you.

FReepmail me if you want on or off my New York ping list.

To be fair, though, I’d like to point out that NY already produces a fair amount of gas.

Gas wells and substations dot the western NY area.
Whether they were wells intentionally drilled, or they are pumping out gas they found in the salt mine regions, I’m not sure. But I know it’s there.
