Conservative Base Stands Up to GOP in NY Race

Asked what he’d do if he got to Congress, Doug Hoffman hesitates. He has a few ideas, such as revisiting the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act, putting the breaks on cap-and-trade legislation. But the idea of winning the November 3 election and becoming the only non-Republican, non-Democrat in the House is a bit much. The national media would descend on him, right away. And that still takes Hoffman by surprise.

“I’m not in this to get the splash and the notoriety,” said Hoffman, “I’m only in this, as an average American, standing up and saying it’s time we take our country back. But, certainly, if it does encourage other people to get up and do that, then so be it.”

The nominee would be chosen by party leaders in the district’s 11 counties; few people were surprised when they chose Deirdre “Dede” Scozzafava, a five-term assemblywoman who’d voted with Democrats on abortion and labor issues, factors that could help the party hold a historically conservative district that had voted for the Obama-Biden ticket last year.
This doesn’t tell the story of this district.

The whole story in 2008 was this. They re-elected John McHugh with 65% of the vote. McHugh was a relatively conservative Republican who held positions on the issues pretty close to Dough Hoffman in this year’s race. McHugh had a 71.55% lifetime rating from the National Conservative Union.

On the same ballot, the district rejected a RINO, John McCain. This district doesn’t vote for libeRals and compromisers on the Republican side.

I’m not sure why the locals picked Scozzafava. I’ve read somewhere that they thought she could fund her own campaign. But now the RNC and RCCC are pouring hundreds of thousands of dollars into her campaign. Dollars that were donated to support the Republican party platform, and are now being used fraudulently to oppose that very platform.

Please, send Hoffman a donation (or use PayPal). I wish we would get behind him as strongly as we got behind Joe Wilson last month.

Markos Moulitsas, founder of The Daily Kos has endorsed Scozzafava. Dede Scozzafava has also been endorsed by NYSUT, the largest labor union in New York, and an affiliate of the National Education Association.

Scozzafava also holds these positions:

Scozzafava has also run in past elections on the Working Families Party (a progressive party associated with ACORN) line on the ballot.

This lady isn’t a RINO, she is a big “R” libeRal democRat.

There are also 17 RINOs in the house who have donated funds to this LibeRal democRat's campaign. They include Boehner and Cantor. I don’t have a full list, but I will be looking for it. These RINOs should be targeted for elimination in the primaries next year.

In favor of Cap and Trade (I need to check my sources on this. Newt said she opposed this)
In favor of Employee Free Choice Act (Card Check)
In favor of the Stimulus
In favor of Bank Bailouts

It is inconceivable that a person with this record is a Republican. Why?

It is insulting to me that the GOP would send mail to my house soliciting donations, and then freely turn those donations over to a candidate like this.

The Republican Party still does not get it. I will support Conservatives - not someone who just so happens to have an 'R' by their name. We do have other options here.

I would not be surprised if there has been (and still is) a deliberate 5th column in the GOP to place and promote democrat philosophies and ideas. They are likely encouraged by the Blue Bloods to rid the party of conservatism.

She has been asked if she would switch parties when she gets to DC, after being elected as a Republican. She hasn’t answered that question, and some people think that she might jump ship once she gets there.

Apparently, she used to be more conservative than her voting record in the past few years. Before 2004, she often ran on the Conservative line in New York, in addition to the Republican line. More recently, she has run on the Working Families Party line in addition to the Republican line.

She was selected by the county party leaders from the counties in the district. I think they didn’t fully analyze their previous congressman and his positions and compare this to the available candidates. Instead, they looked at the Obama 52 point victory and thought the district was leaning more liberal. That could have been a rejection of a RINO (McCain) rather than an agreement with Obama policies. With McHugh, their conservative Republican congressman getting 65% of the vote in that election, that seems more likely.

I also read somewhere (sorry, I didn’t keep a link) that Scozzafava was expected to finance her own campaign. So there might have been a financial component to the decision at the local level.

Locals can make mistakes. That is understandable.

But then, Pete Sessions and the RCCC agreed to support this candidate. They should have vetted her a little more thoroughly. If they had said no, perhaps the locals would have had time to select a more acceptable candidate. Maybe the RCCC could have pointed out that McHugh got 65% of the vote last year, and they should select someone more like McHugh than Obama, who only got 52% of the vote in the district.

The real breakdown in all this is at the RCCC. Sessions has to go. He said that his staffers messed up with this, but if he delegated this decision to the staffers, that is not acceptable. He should be out for that dereliction of duty. If he made the bad decision, then blamed it on his staffers, that is bad too. No matter how you slice it, he needs to go.

And any Republican in the House now who supports Scozzafava should be targeted in the 2010 Primaries. At this point, I think there are 17 “party over principle” Republicans in this situation. They include Boehner and Cantor, as well as Sessions and some others. Hensarling and Kevin McCarthy are on the list. We need to look at the FEC reports on donations after the election to figure out all of the people involved.

We need a 3rd Party (its really a second party as the GOP and DNC are almost one and the same). Support this Conservative and all others who run. They can be the start of the reforms that are needed. We can not mount a 3rd Party race for President at this point but we can go for smaller offices and by doing so help reformers (like Sarah Palin) within the ranks of the Republicans.

Notice how, when the Republicans are in power, they never reverse any left wing legislation. When was the last time they eliminated a useless social program, or funding for a left wing extremist organization? When was the last time they took out the socialist left wing garbage?

I actually made my donation to Hoffman online, but I also wrote a check for the same amount, scanned the check (in color, both side), and obscured my account info. Then I printed a two sided color copy. I wrote “I support conservative candidates” on this “check” and stuck it in the RNC fund raising envelope and mailed it to them.

I have been sending letters, with no check. But I think whoever opens the envelopes just throws away everything but the checks, and keeps the checks. I think this message might get through to someone this time.

I agree with you generally. But this race is an opportunity for a Conservative that really can win. I've heard that Hoffman has committed to caucusing with the Republicans.

The “Leadership” of the GOP will not listen to conservatives. They need a lesson from this race. If Hoffman wins, the “conservatives can’t win” argument is shattered. That is why I strongly support Hoffman in this race. It is only one seat in one district. Also, the Dem is more likely to be a blue dog problem for Pelosi, and the Repubican will definitely be a RINO problem for the Republicans. In this situation, the Conservative victory would be the best outcome. I think the Dem winning might actually be better for conservatives than the Republican.

I agree...but to me...the best way is to show them that we will NOT stand for the running of RINO's. We will not support RINO's. If they run them...then our vote will go somewhere else. Hopefully they will eventually get the message.

When the party establishment backs a RINO...and you and I vote for that RINO just so a dem doesn't win...then we are giving them positive reinforcement. We are rewarding their behavior. The rat will continue to do what it does because it gets away with it. The GOP will continue to be DEM light...and move to the left...slower...but surely.

When you and I tell them to pound sand...and those in power LOSE it because those RINO's they support lose. That sets up negative reinforcement. When they start supporting strong conservative candidates...they will see the punishment cease. This leads the rats to avoid that negative condition of losing. That leads to negative reinforcement of the behavior WE want...which is the party's support of strong conservative candidates. Any LEADER in the party that supports a RINO needs to be punished. When they get in line...we will take the punishment away and that lack of negative stimuli will yeild positive results.

It's all very psychological. ;-)
