House GOP may face a ‘civil war’ over New York's Scozzafava
The Hill ^ | 10/15/09 06:05 AM ET | By Reid Wilson

The House GOP conference is bitterly divided over a centrist New York Republican’s run for the House seat vacated by Army Secretary John McHugh.

Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava, who backs abortion rights and has voiced support for gay rights, has drawn a challenger from the right who is running on the Conservative Party line. And though House leaders have urged conference members to donate, many have pointedly refused to back Scozzafava.

The Club for Growth, Concerned Women of America, former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.) and evangelical leader Gary Bauer have all endorsed Doug Hoffman, the Conservative Party candidate.

<snip>

Just 17 members — about 10 percent of the GOP conference — have written checks to Scozzafava’s campaign. They include House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio), Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.), National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) Chairman Pete Sessions (Texas) and Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), who is in charge of recruiting candidates to run next year.

I have been following this race. This is just one example of the RNC and NRCC supporting a RINO candidate against a conservative values candidate.

I hope FReepers will donate to Doug Hoffman's campaign and let the RNC and NRCC know that you support conservative candidates, not the national RINO committees.

NRCC funds are being spent by Scozzafava attacking Hoffman, the conservative, not Bill Owens, the Democrat. On most issues, Scozzafava (R) and Owens (D) are in agreement and share a common position.

To those who favor “taking back the Republican party“ and returning the party to it’s core values and roots, this is an opportunity to send a message to party leadership. Support the conservative, please.

NY GOP is still mostly a joke, and a bad one at that.

It is rather disappointing to see Cantor sending money to the wrong candidate.

$200 donated.

The RNC makes me sick to my stomach.

I’m in Florida and have donated Mucho $$$ to Rubio. I actually think Rubio might win it all. Time to show the RNC that “liberal minds” already have a party of their own.

The GOP has enough “centrists.” Conservatives should not vote for another.

The far right GOP members need to wake up, YOU LIVE IN NEW YORK. Scozzafara is about as good as you can get! Better Scozzafara that a full fledged DemoRat!

No kidding. And Boehner too. I’m sure there are other names on that list we’d be surprised at.

Shame on him ... say goodbye to presidential ambitions.

RINOs need to be taked out in the primaries.

If you can’t take the RINO out in the primary then that district has bigger problems.

Running a Lib, a RINO and a Conservative in the General Election only means the Lib gets elected.

Civil War? Hardly. A tough primary? Sure. The Hill only wished it was a civil war.

They left out that she also supports card check & the stimulus.

It’s a joke how this woman got nominated. The NY GOP is seriously screwed up - more than most I should say.

You have forgotten the mantra. Please repeat after me:

'Support candidates who can win.'

'Support candidates who can win.'

'Support candidates who can win.'

'Support candidates who can win.'

'Support candidates who can win.'

Now, don't you feel better to be in lock-step with the leading republican political philosophy? With the anti-incumbent mood, we're in for A LOT of this type of crap. The 'leaders' in the GOP will use this situation to run A LOT of CRAP candidates.

"Better Scozzafara than a full fledged DemoRat!"

I used to feel the same way but thse days are gone. I'm not going to fall for that reasoning anymore. If every conservative Republican and Democrat votes for the Conservative, he can win. Otherwise, what does it matter?

People like you are why we are in the position we are in today in this Nation.

Vote for a liberal, even if s/he DOES have a “R” for political affiliation.

NO MORE LIBERALS!

I live in NY 20, where the GOP put up a knucklehead who took 3 weeks to decide if he was for or against the stimulus last november. In spite of a 175,00 vote edge in registration for the GOP, the party managed to pull defeat from the jaws of victory. The ONLY criteria for choosing statewide candidates right now is their ability to substantially contribute to their own campaign.

What the hell does it take to turn this party around???
