No Debating Congress' Lavish Health Care
CBS News ^ | 13 Oct 2009 | Sharyl Attkisson

(CBS) As members of Congress debate a "public option" for health care coverage, they remain safe and secure in their own generous health plan.

CBS News correspondent Sharyl Attkisson reports it's subsidized by millions of your tax dollars annually. The government doesn't even keep track the total cost.

What exactly does Congress get? Sen. Lindsey Graham agreed to show CBS News first hand, flashing his Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance card.

Blue Cross Blue Shield is one of five plans offered to members of Congress. Most Americans, 74 percent are offered only one plan - if their employer offers insurance at all.

And members of Congress earn $174,000 a year - triple the income of the average working-age household. Yet their premiums are about the same.

For them, there's no coverage limit - a major factor for the American families bankrupted or thrown into poverty by health care costs.

Pre-existing conditions? No problem for congressmen and women. The rest of us are out of luck.

And the elected officials get still more perks most Americans can only dream of. Got a cold? You probably have to take time off work and wait to see a doctor.....

On-call doctors, can be seen on a moments notice by physicians at Walter Reed or Bethesda Naval Hospital PLUS the insurance is portable. If they get booted out of office they get to keep this platinum covered insurance for life.

AND they continue to exclude themselves from forced coverage as part of the Baucus debacle.

This is what really burns me up.

I want ALL government employees on a govt-run health plan FIRST, then we can talk about imposing it on the ‘little’ people..

what happened to ‘draining the swamp’????

...at many of the Townhall Meetings members of Congress were asked if they would sign up for Obama care...they always hemmed and hawed on that one.

Well they are the royalty, we are the little people begging for the crumbs.

Actually the congresscritters may get caught in their own grinder. IF obamacare is enacted, they are going to limit what doctors can earn. I say a poll somewhere that 45% of docs will leave the practice if their pay is limited. Congress’s doctors will probably get caught up in this.

(Treacherous backstabber thinks);
“My Lord Obama has promised each of us in Congress continuation of our own
Platinum-level Senatorial Healthcare untaxable plan which will be
forever, complete with Kennedy-level-doctor-capture able to pull doctors
from hundreds of tumor boards for us, for our families and a few very selected friends.”

When you're up to your ass in alligators it's easy to forget you're there to drain the swamp. There was a great poster to that effect back in the 70’s. There were lots of great posters back in the 60’s and 70’s. Too bad they sort of faded away, along with the hippies.

Government employees also have privatized Social Security.

Good story! I can't believe CBS is reporting on this -- I mean, CBS????

Five or ten years ago, a friend told me (I don't know where he saw it) that there's always an ambulance on stand-by at the Capitol building. One day, a guard had a heart attack, but they wouldn't send him to the hospital in the Congressional ambulance that was right there -- he had to wait while one was called.

The hypocrisy is absolutely deafening.
They should lead by example before laying this crap on the rest of us. Its not about insuring the uninsured, its about govt. power over EVERY aspect of a person’s life. That is NOT what this country was founded and built on. Its socialism and its a failure before it ever starts.

But the reasons they are reporting on it are probably different than you suppose. I would imagine they are trying to stir people up to demand the same level of coverage that our representatives have - not trying to point out waste/government excess. Which is what we would probably see...

There will be no solution to this problem until we find a way to impede the ability of voters of other states to keep returning to office their lawmakers who have enough seniority to bring home the bacon. Regardless of how disgusting we might find a Ted Kennedy or Nancy Pelosi, they have built sufficient kingdoms in their state or district to assure their continued electability. And the really frustrating thing is they are using money from hard working tax payers in the other states or districts to buy the votes that let them build seniority.

Basically, I am not a fan of term limits, but sometimes it necessary to resort to something that under normal circumstances we would not even consider in order to cure an ill.

I don't know the answer, but unless we find it our days as the America we've know and loved are limited.

It's about time someone brought up this comparison. If Congress (the Dems) is soooo proud of their health care bill they should be required to use it. But I guess some pigs are more equal then others.

True—just look at the thugs leading countries in S. America...putting away millions in banks out of their country...becoming wealthy.
