The study received a mixed review from Dr. William C. Reeves, who directs public health research on the syndrome at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He called the research exciting but preliminary, and said he was surprised that a prestigious journal like Science had published it, because the researchers did not state the ages or sex of the patients and controls, or describe the duration of the illness or how it came on.
“If I don’t know the nature of the cases and controls, I can’t interpret the findings,” Dr. Reeves said.
“We and others are looking at our own specimens and trying to confirm it,” he said, adding, “If we validate it, great. My expectation is that we will not.”
He noted that there had been false starts before, including a study in the 1990s linking the syndrome to another retrovirus, which could not be confirmed by later research.

He said health officials became especially concerned last spring when several research teams looking at prostate cancer reported finding XMRV in 3 percent to 4 percent of blood samples from healthy people in control groups. That could translate into 10 million American being infected with a newly discovered, poorly understood retrovirus that has already been linked to two diseases.

It could be. I got what I thought was mono last year and I haven’t been the same since. Can barely breathe sometimes and could sleep 16 hours a day. Used to get by on 6 hours and do fine. Gotten so bad I am taking off works for a year or so and try to get back to where I feel like budging out of my chair.

UTI? The only way to find out is have your urinary tract swabbed. Think of looooong q-tip (a lot thinner than the regular ones) going up to where the urine comes from. It's not pleasant but it's necessary. It's been over ten years since I got one but I remember it clearly.
Or, simply stop drinking gasoline.
Retroviruses are the biggest pile of unscientific cr*p out there. If HIV is the cause of AIDS, how come HIV is not a sexually transmitted disease? Its transmission is orders of magnitudes below accepted STDs such as gonorrhea and chlamydia. The only thing less scientific that retroviruses are prions, and don’t get me started on that!
I always think these kinds of links between viruses, or bacteria, and chronic illness are really interesting.
How long did we think most ulcers were from stress or too much acidic food, and then presto, we find out they’re curable with antibiotics.

After reading about the Great Flu Influenza of 1918, I found out that most of the deaths were from secondary pneumococcus bacterial infections. So virusses set up your body for attack by bacteria.
Dr. William Reeves of the United States CDC/CFS program MUST be removed and replaced with someone acceptable to the CFIDS community NOW. The latest study on XMRV, the fourth human retrovirus recently discovered, provides further evidence that CFIDS is in fact a “real disease” and not a psychocrap illness that Reeves, his CDC associates, and his contractors can not refute. Reeves and his associates should be prosecuted by the law and put in jail for their deliberate destructive activities during Reeves time as the head of the CDC/CFS program. Investigations have been under way by the Inspector Generals of the CDC, NIH and DHHS. We have also requested that Reeves and the CDC be investigated, yet again, for possible funding issues with the CDC/CFS contractors (Emory University Mind-Body Program and ABT Associates). We do expect that Congressional action will begin soon.
Reeves and his CDC associates MUST BE REMOVED NOW. Enough is enough. The damage that this greedy, stupid man has done to millions of sick people is beyond criminal. Reeves is directly responsible for thousands of deaths to heart disease, the cancers that are seen in high proportions in the CFIDS population, and the suicides of those that could no longer “live” a life of pain and despair. Those that took their own life were not weak or mentally ill. Instead, they were so sick and with no where to turn and no one to believe them or help them saw no choice but to end their own suffering. Thousands of deaths sit on the head of Dr. William Reeves.

We can NOT depend on the CDC as they have done nothing but demean and damage the CFID sick over the last three decades. The CDC/CFS/Reeves have wasted millions of dollars and two generations of lives while the Whittemore-Peterson Institute has made massive progress in just two short years and with about one million dollars in funding. It is going to be outside research that provides the cure for CFIDS, NOT the CDC. Please donate to this wonderful research institute - one that was in fact started by a Mother because her daughter was so ill with CFIDS. When a Mother is involved in the health of her child (and other “children”) you KNOW it will succeed - and the WPI HAS indeed succeeded brilliantly.

You will also read that this virus may have been discovered by a female reseacher at the CDC around 1991. The CDC did nothing with this research and her career was damaged. HAD the CDC bothered to look into her work back in 1991, millions of people, both here in the US and worldwide, would NOT be so sick, disabled, and in too many cases - dead from those cancers associated with this new virus. Recognize that this virus is believed to be contagious and that means that anyone - everyone is a possible target for this disease. I have lived with CFIDS for 15 years and my life has been pretty miserable. I truly wish I had died 15 years ago from a quick, deadly heart attack rather than have had to live in this miserable CFIDS sick body. Says something doesn’t it?
