Benefits 'Wrecked The British Work Ethic,' New Study Claims

STEVE DOUGHTY 08th October 2009

Britons have become reliant on the benefits system, according to a new study The stigma that once went with claiming benefits rather than working for a living has been lost, a study has claimed.

The work ethic that inspired successive generations has ebbed away in the face of the welfare state.

Over the past decades each generation has seen more and more people milking the benefit system, which has sapped their will to work, the research from the Centre for Economic Performance said.

The findings come at a time when both major parties have committed themselves to cutting numbers who live on incapacity benefit. There are 2.6million adults who claim the handout meant for the sick and incapable, with around 20 per cent thought to be fully able - but unwilling - to work.

The report said: 'It has long been recognised that generous unemployment benefits create moral hazard - workers are partly protected against the consequences of being unemployed, so they are less likely to search for jobs with the same intensity.'

Why? The left knows and wants this outcome.

Surprise, when given the choice of doing a mundane task repeatedly for money or getting free money; people generally chose free money.

Because American leftist are smarter than those in Europe. They can do the same things in a way that works. But note this not mean the American leftist are smarter than the European because that would be American exceptionalism and we all know that is bad.

The left seeks to drive us all to become slaves on their industrial plantation. Doesn’t matter how well things work, so long as they get to live in the big house and have their choice of the comely and nubile young slaves growin’ up. Come on up to the big house, I think you are special and I have something to show you...

Communists start with lies, move on to theft, then slavery, then torture, and then murder. The next generation, trained in short term power and long term pointlessness, goes on to perversion.

This is one those “no-sh.. sherlock” situations that conservatives know so well but libs seem unable to learn. If you give someone an incentive not to work, they will not work. Human nature. Something libs are totally clueless about.

workers are partly protected against the consequences of being unemployed, so they are less likely to search for jobs with the same intensity.'

Looks like the unemployed are going to get an unprecedented 3 yrs - and, yes, there will be many who will not seriously seek employment until they are convinced they are looking at the last few weeks of the benefits.

There are also countless thousands on 'disability' - which has been rubber-banded to include everything from a true disability to a stubbed toe.

Thousands and thousands are loafing around on disability checks, food stamps and totally free medical/counseling care/medications - no co pay, funded out of Medicare/caid.

Take for example, a near neighbor I know: She's in her 40's and is considered to have a 'duel dependency' - ie, she was a drunk and a druggie.

She's been off both for years, and is perfectly able to work. She used to, before falling into drugs and alcohol, an accomplished artist in CA who actively and successfully pursued her career. But she has become so dependent on the free living she's getting now and presumably will forever, that she's not at all interested in any work.

She has her days to spend as she wants, she jets to Flor, CA, other states a couple times a year to visit friends, she eats filet minon on a regular basis.

This is more than I can afford.

My question is, why should people like this be able to live off the rest of us?

Then, of course, there's the tens of thousands that 'live free' with with the newest 'disease d'rigure' - bi-polar.

Bi-polar is a great one as it is not something that can be verified, medically. All one has to know to get so diagnosed is the right words.

It's almost to the point where, for each person that works, another one 'lives free."

The work ethic that inspired successive generations has ebbed away in the face of the welfare state.

My brother has a sister who's husband, due to drugs, died leaving her with four very young children. She and the children lived on Social Security benefits. My brother's sister brought a man in to live with her and the children. She didn't want to marry him because "her check" would be cut out. After about five years she married the man and they, for the most part, lived off the checks the children received. When the children reached adulthood "their checks" stopped making it necessary for someone to go to work. Had it not been for the "loans" from my brother's parents, his sister and brother in law would have lost their home and cars because neither one would get a job. They almost divorced fighting over who should go to work. Finally, they both found work at jobs where they didn't have to declare part of their incomes (wanted to use the system but not pay into it).

My brother's mother perjured herself twice for her daughter. The first time she stated her daughter paid rent on an apartment she owned when she lived rent free. This was so she could get an increase in government assistance. The second time was after her daughter and son in law were working and her daughter needed an operation. My brother's mother perjured herself saying the money in her daughter's bank account actual belonged to her. This was so her daughter wouldn't have to pay for the operation. Needless to say, the four children didn't fall far from the tree.

These people think I'm mean because I refuse to have anything to do with them.

Probably a combination of that as well as the blue collar industrial jobs that someone under IQ 100 could do without a problem not being there. If you’re not going to be a Chemist, Lawyer,MBA, etc and your choice is between welfare and a low rung service industry job, what are you going to take?

I am amzed that this is reported as ‘news’.

It is commonly known Here in the UK that working in the United Kingdom is a matter of choice. Poorer families do the maths and can easily calculate whether working or receiving benefits is more beneficial. It’s as simple as that.

“Benefits ‘Wrecked The British Work Ethic,’

And if it worked there it can work here.

Even FDR knew this:

Excerpted from the 1935 State of the Union address:

A large proportion of these unemployed and their dependents have been forced on the relief rolls. The burden on the Federal Government has grown with great rapidity. We have here a human as well as an economic problem. When humane considerations are concerned, Americans give them precedence. The lessons of history, confirmed by the evidence immediately before me, show conclusively that continued dependence upon relief induces a spiritual disintegration fundamentally destructive to the national fiber. To dole our relief in this way is to administer a narcotic, a subtle destroyer of the human spirit. It is inimical to the dictates of a sound policy. It is in violation of the traditions of America. Work must be found for able-bodied but destitute workers.

The Federal Government must and shall quit this business of relief.
