NEW YORK (Reuters Life!) - The United States is the most admired country globally thanks largely to the star power of President Barack Obama and his administration, according to a new poll.
It climbed from seventh place last year, ahead of France, Germany, the United Kingdom and Japan which completed the top five nations in the Nation Brand Index (NBI).
"What's really remarkable is that in all my years studying national reputation, I have never seen any country experience such a dramatic change in its standing as we see for the United States for 2009," said Simon Anholt, the founder of NBI, which measured the global image of 50 countries each year.
He believes that during the previous administration of George W. Bush the United States suffered in the world ranking with its unpopular foreign policies but since Obama was elected, and despite the recent economic turmoil, the country's status has risen globally.
"There is no other explanation," Anholt said in an interview, referring to the impact of Obama.

How about this. The world is in economic meltdown and the thinking folks in the real world understand that America represents the best chance for economic upward mobility in history. I dunno, as a conservative, I’m not supposed to be able to think too deeply but I think that is a better answer than the one provided by the article...

Popularity isn’t going to fix our economy.
I don’t care what the world thinks as long as we do what is right. Screw the socialist and dictators.
Yet, our President keeps telling the world how much we suck.
There’s some 200 or so different countries. Being the 7th most “popular” (whatever that means) seems fairly reasonable to me. Where does the obsession for being number one even come from? Especially when it comes to something as ephemeral as being liked or not?

Find it interesting that there is NO data given from the poll, no list of the audit house for the poll and no date/time frame given for this poll...all we know it could have been done in 1986 or 2003....

I never bought the idea, and still don’t, that most of the world hates us. (Except maybe the “extremist” muslims)
They might envy us but i think that they see how we are letting our politicians ruin the best country in the world and maybe they think we’re a bunch of fools for taking for granted what we’ve got. They see, from the outside looking in, how we’re being sold a bill of goods and we’re falling for it hook, line, sinker.
They may be frustrated with our stupidity but they don’t hate us.
We’re the last refuge for freedom and they all know it. If we blow it, the whole world is screwed.
The world will never enjoy freedom again without the United States.
Everything to gloat about, because to them, the United States will be ‘disposed of’.
