Steele applauded ACORN leader in speech
CNN ^ | Oct 5, 2009 | Peter Hamby

Like other GOP leaders, Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele took a harsh tone toward ACORN last month after several of the group's employees were caught on tape offering financial advice to activists posing undercover as a pimp and prostitute.

On September 15, after the Senate voted to defund the community organizing group, Steele released a statement accusing ACORN of "nefarious activities," saying it uses "illegal means to achieve its ends." A few days later, on September 24, Steele called for congressional Democrats to investigate the "corrupt organization" and said damage control efforts by ACORN officials were "insulting."

But during a speaking appearance in the days between issuing those two statements, Steele had kind words for ACORN and its CEO, Bertha Lewis, who happened to be guiding that so-called damage control.

Appearing September 21 at a historically black college in Arkansas, the RNC chairman spoke diplomatically of the group and its history of organizing in low-income communities.

"The organization has a problem that it needs to deal with," Steele told the audience in remarks that were recorded and posted on YouTube over the weekend. "I will say that current head of the organization, she has done a phenomenal job of getting out in front of it. I applaud her. I take her at her word that she wants to make sure that the bad apples are thrown out."

Republican “leadership” never seems to learn. ACORN is beyond rehabilitation the only way to fix it is to exterminate it and all of its affiliate organizations.

Steele is a McPain latte. He acts like Obama and hopes his color will insulate him from criticism. The sooner the money stops the sooner we can start rebuilding the GOP.

What’s with the sudden attacks on Steele? You have this politico story: “GOP leaders to Steele: Back off “ and you have this.

I have my problems with Steele, but these coordinated attacks by the media make take pause.

Discussion around another aspect of Steele's speech here: Steele says Dems, GOP failing to address poverty (pandering to a black audience)

Maybe you need to get a picture of Steele wearing the ACORN cap too. Any Republican who voices or applauds any support of the work of any Socialist organization should feel the heat of CHESTNUTS roasting on an open fire

Steele should step down from this position. He was a response to Obama’s election but has no solid direction.

Steele is a major disappointment. He needs to go.

We’ve got an organization that is corrupt to the core, and this buffoon thinks it’s a good idea to talk respectfully about it.

When people on our side do this, they completely short circuit activity that should be leveled to dissolve the organization.

Just how much corruption does Steele think is acceptable?

Isn’t overlooking the trafficking of children the last straw? Evidently not. One wonders, what in God’s name would be?

Touting socialists is bad enough, but touting a criminal enterprise is totally inexcusable.

Can somebody tell me why the RNC is so incompetent. It's not just Steele, though he has been terrible. The top Republicans keep criticizing conservatives, calling them “the fringe” and using other insults.
Why do the top Republicans continue to attack Sarah Palin and none of them defend her? Are these people weak and unprincipled, stupid or both?

Steele is not a conservative. His jujitsu here on ACORN reminds me of similar idiotic comments of his on abortion ...

This is NOT a policy guy.

Steele makes me want to puke. Along with the vast majority of other Repugs in Congress. Projectile. And they still want us to vote for them and send them money.

Squish. Steele was appointed for one reason only and it wasn’t the content of his character.

I agree. Good call...

Unless he’s replaced with someone like J.C. Watts, that would be a no brainer.
