The commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan bitterly complained in an interview Sunday about the Pentagon bureaucracy that he said was hampering his efforts to fight insurgents.
In a profile on CBS television's "60 minutes," Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal said he faced pressure to move quickly from Defense Secretary Robert Gates while the Pentagon had moved slowly to get officers assigned to his staff.

“Power attracts the corruptible. Absolute power attracts the absolutely corruptible. This is the danger of entrenched bureaucracy to its subject population. Even the spoils systems are preferable because levels of tolerance are lower and the corrupt can be thrown out periodically. Entrenched bureaucracy seldom can be touched short of violence. Beware when Civil Service and Military join hands.”

Can't spend a day and read the legislation, got to vote on it now. Then he can take his time and sign it after his vacation...
Seems to have turned into a common theme...
Sounds like the General needs a direct link to the CiC who can then tell the Pentagon bureaucracy what to do ...
My guess, the bureaucracy ate my report ...
Agree, but he won't be around much longer. Hope he has his "retirement" papers in order. The oval office moron and his lackys don't like forceful, independant thinkers. They will find some way to get rid of him.
The good news is...we only have three and a half more years to put up with this kind of BULL$HIT!!
McChrystal is getting our troops killed with his ROE. Like the ox before the cart.
Apparently now this fine General is bound down by a bunch of pencil pushing JAG weenie types in the Pentagon.
"Please may I have a staff?"
In the meantime over 40 fine American service personnel have lost their lives since McChrystal issued his report. That's criminal.
Never in my memory, and I started my military career with ROTC in the late 60's.
Apparently now this fine General is bound down by a bunch of pencil pushing JAG weenie types in the Pentagon.
That was as true during the Bush administration as it is now. Presidents come and presidents go, but the Pentagon is forever.
In the meantime over 40 fine American service personnel have lost their lives since McChrystal issued his report. That's criminal.
OK, he issued his report 30 days ago saying we needed a new strategy and more troops. So how long do you think it should have taken to come up with that new strategy and send in the new troops?
It is gathering dust.
Any wonder why it was leaked?
HA! I just went to Evan Bayh's website and you cannot find the word DEMOCRAT anywhere! hahahaha
Really? It's pretty fresh in my mind that any officer could walk through a Platoon area and say "you, you, and you..."
So how long do you think it should have taken to come up with that new strategy and send in the new troops?
I thought "He who's middle name can never be said" already had a strategy. IMO those 40K troops should already be on their way over there. Period.
McChrystal is the Theatre Commander. Period.
And could that platoon commander's general say "I need 40,000 troops. This brigade, that brigade, and the two brigades over there. Come with me?" We're talking about a major deployment at a time when we've still got 120,000 troops in Iraq. The entire Army and Marine Corps are literally just back from deployment, getting ready for deployment, or are deployed. You don't just grab 40,000 and send them to Afghanistan without putting a major kink in current planning. And you don't get them there overnight. Even if those extra troops were approved today it'll be months before they and their equipment are in country.
I thought "He who's middle name can never be said" already had a strategy.
Whatever strategy Obama had probably didn't include sending tens of thousands of troops there.
McChrystal is the Theatre Commander. Period.
He is A theater commander. One of several. If you're going to rob another theater of resources to send to General McChrystal then shouldn't you first examine the risks involved?
No sh**.
This is a very surprising interview. He’s a general and just figuring this all out? Someone at his level of command should know how Things Work and have contingency plans/workarounds.
Could be you are right. In any case, the general is a “short-timer” as I wrote in my post.
