Nike has announced they've resigned Michael Vick to an advertising contract. You can tell them what you think of that by clicking here

I think this is disgusting. Here's what I wrote to them:

I understand Nike has entered into another advertising agreement with Michael Vick. While some would argue that Mr. Vick has paid his debt to society for his dog fighting conviction the reality is that he also was behind the abduction of stray and family dogs in his neighborhood for training purposes. He's never answered for that. So, I will never purchase another Nike product while he is under contract with your company. This is sad and you should be ashamed of yourselves.

I don't really care if they do or not. I would not be less or more likely to buy their products
But to me it seems very foolish on Nike's part. Very bad PR.

What the heck are they thinking?

Nike has announced they've resigned Michael Vick to an advertising contract.

This is about the worst market positioning error that I've seen on the part of a well-known multi-national company in a very long time.

No matter what you may think about Michael Vick personally, he'll be radioactive until the day he dies to millions of consumers. There will forever be something of a "scarlet letter" stamped on this guy.

I think it's suicidal for Nike to associate their name with his.

Congratulations. You certaintly are well within your right to whine, bawl, piss and moan to Nike. I’m sure you got them quaking in their boots.

I’m going fire off a counter e-mail to them, thanking them for not burying someone in the ground who already served their debt to society.

here is what I wrote
I am writing to let your company know how disappointed I am in your decision to resign Mike Vick. Your decision illustrates the fact that your company is not interested in standing up for what is right, only in the bottom line. Now that Vick is marketable again your company is full steam ahead. I will not spend a dime on Nike products until this decision is permanently reversed.

Agreed. I love dogs, but the man has spent time in Federal prison over this. He’s paid his debt, and he should be allowed to pick up the pieces and move on.

You obviously didn't read my entire post but that's fine. Go try it again, then run your mouth.

BTW. Be sure to remember that "paid his debt to society" stuff the next time some politician you don't agree with goes down that road.

You don’t have to bury him. But you don’t have to reward him either. If a child molester paid his debt to society and got out would you reward him also? Forgive and forget? I highly doubt it.

Are you equating his crime(s) with child molestation? That’s quite a leap. I’m not required to forget; I am required to forgive.

Maybe you three will get lucky and a pedophile, who has served his time, will move in next door to you so you can open your arms and welcome him into your home....you know, since he's done his time and should be allowed back into society.

Again the molester/pedophile comparison; it’s a straw argument. We’re discussing a totally different crime, totally unrelated to child molestation and/or pedophilia.

It’s not a straw argument at all. We are discussing crimes, paying your debt to society, and then getting on with your life. We are just using a different crime as an example, the theory is the same.

Let’s use a different crime if you are uncomfortable with our example. If you owned a company and somebody embezzled money from you, got caught, went to prison and “paid their debt to society”. After his debt to society was paid would you hire that person back to handle your finances?

Another lousy comparison. That person doesn’t have to be hired to do your finances. He can be ruled out on incompetance.

How does dogfighting mean no longer allowed to play football? To no longer being allowed to be a veternarian or dogcatcher? Okay valid comparison.

I didn’t say Vick should not be able to play football. I said he should not be rewarded by Nike. I stand by that statement.

To: WatchOutForSnakes

It is most certainly a straw argument. To equate crimes of sexual deviancy with what Vick was tried, and convicted for, are TOTALLY unrelated. Do we sentence the first time shoplifter to the same jail sentence a convicted murderer should get? Why not? The crimes are not the same. Trying to draw a corollary between the most heinous of crimes and what Vick did time for is nonsense. Look, I’m not a fan of Vick; never have been, never will be. But, I do believe in the concept of second chances; the man did his time for his conviction...are we to believe the people who’ve done bad things and lived through the appropriate punishment are to be thrown on the ash-heap, with no chance of redemption/forgiveness? I refuse to accept that.

As an aside, all molesters and pedophiles should be shot by firing squad. A poorly-trained firing squad. So it takes a while. :-)

But if the shoplifter and the murderer both served their time, paid their debt to society and got out, under your argument are they not then equal at that point? Your argument being that once an offender has served his debt to society they should be allowed to resume their life as normal.
