Newcomers to political activism may be surprised to learn that this summer was not the first time the Left had used lies and distortions to smear its opponents as racist. As David Horowitz pointed out Monday, this is the Left's defining modus operandi and has been for a generation: as he writes, "the left’s chief political contribution to American politics is witch-hunts."
Another chief contribution would be the myths that undergird those witch-hunts. On the health-care front, we've seen MSNBC talker Ed Schultz lie to transform protest signs into death threats (even though the correct wording was on the screen for everyone to see). Jimmy Carter soon repeated the lie as Gospel.
Last night on Fox News Channel's Hannity, Bob Beckel revisited a golden oldie "racist" hoax to smear a man who is now dead...

I have written Sean a few times about Bob Butthead being on the show...he is arrogant, rude and is like arguing with Stalin. I usually find myself turning the show off when Butthead is on!!

Did you ever see Beckel back when he filled in for Michael Kinsley on “Crossfire”? He was rude to the point of being obnoxious. He’s really mellowed — I assume from his recovery from substance abuse.
Now, I disagree with him but I actually find him likable.
Jesse Helms was my hero...a true southern gentleman...

We used to have a lot of “rock ribbed Republicans” in our Congress. They were anti-Communist and from the mid west. From places like Indiana, Illinois and Ohio

Beckel has discussed his addiction problems, and he’s recovered or recovering from them. I wish him Godspeed in the effort.
I just think he’s wrong to lie about Jesse Helms.
