The new head of the Census Bureau said he decided to drop ACORN as an agency partner because the bureau's link to the community organization was hurting efforts to get Americans to participate in the count.
Robert M. Groves, who was confirmed in July, said in a news conference Wednesday that census officials in the Chicago office had reported difficulties enlisting other community groups because of the controversy over ACORN. The bureau is trying to hook up with 100,000 local groups, some as small as neighborhood block associations, to help spread the message that it's safe and vital to fill out and mail the 2010 census form.
ACORN, which stands for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, has been accused of voter fraud, and came under fire this month after converative actists posing as a prostitute and a pimp released videos of AORN employees advising them on home buying.
"The negative press on ACORN was becoming a distraction, and hurting our overall effort to get the facts (about the census) out," Groves said.
Groves sent ACORN a letter earlier this month saying he had lost confidence in the group's ability to manage the census message and was terminating their agreement.
The 2010 Census, which will be taken on April 1, is the basis for redistricting and the distribution of more than $400 billion in federal funds. In testimony before Congress Tuesday, Groves said he is concerned that the recession and tensions over immigration will deter people from participating.

Amen!
Hey, WaPo — way to stay on top of ‘Breaking News’....
Groves needs to go. All he sees is a PR problem. He had no problem with ACORN until then.
Is that anything like the chronicles of Nardia?
All this crap would not be coming out if McLame won....
Better it’s exposed. Get it over quick. Then elect Sarah next time.
So the gangster’s plan to steal all future elections has become too obvious?
Breaks my heart. . .
Wife and I escorted a ‘census taker’ off our property two months ago.
