When it comes to greenhouse-gas emissions, Energy Secretary Steven Chu sees Americans as unruly teenagers and the Administration as the parent that will have to teach them a few lessons.
Speaking on the sidelines of a smart grid conference in Washington, Dr. Chu said he didnt think average folks had the know-how or will to to change their behavior enough to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions.
The American public just like your teenage kids, arent acting in a way that they should act, Dr. Chu said. The American public has to really understand in their core how important this issue is. (In that case, the Energy Department has a few renegade teens of its own.)
The administration aims to teach themliterally. The Environmental Protection Agency is focusing on real children. Partnering with the Parent Teacher Organization, the agency earlier this month launched a cross-country tour of 6,000 schools to teach students about climate change and energy efficiency.
Were showing people across the country how energy efficiency can be part of what they do every day, said EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson. Confronting climate change, saving money on our utility bills, and reducing our use of heavily-polluting energy can be as easy as making a few small changes.
Still, Secretary Chu said he didnt think that the public would throw the same political temper tantrum over climate legislation has has happened with the healthcare debate.
Asked if he expected a town-hall style pushback, Dr. Chu said he was optimistic the public would buy the administrations arguments that energy efficiency and caps on greenhouse-gas emissions will spark an economic rebound.
I dont think so maybe Im optimistic, but theres very little debate that a new green energy economy will bring economic prosperity, Mr. Chu told reporters.
Dont look now, but theres actually quite a lot of debate as to the economic merits of the new green-energy economy. Whether that will spell a healthcare-style revolt against the energy and climate bill stewing in the Senate is another question.
An update: Energy Department spokesman Dan Leistikow added: Secretary Chu was not comparing the public to teenagers. He was saying that we need to educate teenagers about ways to save energy. He also recognized the need to educate the broader public about how important clean energy industries are to our competitive position in the global economy. He believes public officials do have an obligation to make their case to the American people on major legislation, and thats what hes doing.
What about it Mr. "Teacher" and Energy Czar Chu??
The lib-Dem philosophy in a nutshell -- "government knows how to run your life better than you do."
And the feminist response to this paternalistic, patriarchal government is where?
I think I hear crickets chirping.
When do we say the government has screwed up enough with its so-called “energy policy” and let the market loose to be free again?
Enough of the fascist/socialist regulation. The energy market should be free.
Ping.
I have a energy efficient 408 powered 1971 Duster. I’m getting 23 MPG with this hotrod. Just proud to do my part!
Note to Chu

I have an idea Dr. Chu - find a better alternative that allows for the same lifestyle and then come back to us. I’m not interested in altering my life by way of action or taxation payment to deal with an issue that does not exist.
We have an energy problem? How about as Energy Tsar you work to allow for new drilling?
Nope, can’t have that right Dr. Chu? Still tilting at that Global Warming windmill?
ah so, the Fatherland concept advances- That makes it fascism the obamites are admiring
socialists prefer a more maternal form of authoritarianism, aka the motherland
now, will the fatherland demand that we all clean up our rooms or take away our car keys?
“Chu on this”....
LoL. Love the update note.
Don’t believe what you hear - we’ll interpret it for you because you’re too dumb to understand it
These people are so much smarter than you and I, their first concern is political not scientific. Why should we do something which is going to cost us a lot of our own money and have a negligible impact. Truly amazing.
Link no workee?
Sorry, here’s the correct link:
Dr. Chu, I have cut all the energy that I can without sitting in the dark at night or sweltering in 98 degree temps during the Florida summer. I've cut my consumption to the bare bones. I'm not paying enough you say? Progress Energy wants an increase of 30%. They tried that last year but settled for 17%. Now if this increase passes, I will be paying the same for using half the energy.
You want more on top of that?
Yes, we act like teenage kids that feed, clothe, and protect the rest of the world....Fu Chu....
First thing we “teenagers” should do is turn off the television and the radio every time Mr. Chu’s boss decides to spend an hour lecturing to us, speaking to the morning shows, or yucking it up with comedians. The energy saving would be enormous.
Next, his boss should not need 15 cars to take him to play golf every weekend. Cut back the playing. Games are for teenagers. He should also quit taking his wife out of town for date night. It’s a teenage statement to a girl “Look at who I am and what I can do with my position”.
Perhaps it’s time for the teenagers in the White House to grow up first. They are taking, while the rest of us are producing.
You silly teenagers and you “productive economy”. It wasn’t that way when we were kids, before everyone went crazy with all this civilization stuff. We had our nuts and berries, and the occasional wooly mammoth, and we liked it!
Anyone know what size home Chu has? Bet it ain’t tiny....
Sez another ‘ex-spurt’* who is probably hauled around in a black government Suburban.
*former drip under pressure.
