After Sizing Up New Washington, Bullies Start To Have Their Way
IBD Editorials ^ | September 18, 2009 | MARK STEIN

Was it only April? There was President Obama, speaking (as is his wont) in Prague, about Iran's nuclear program and ballistic missile capability, and saluting America's plucky allies:

"The Czech Republic and Poland have been courageous in agreeing to host a defense against these missiles," he declared. "As long as the threat from Iran persists, we will go forward with a missile defense system that is cost-effective and proven."

On Thursday, the administration scrapped its missile defense plans for Eastern Europe. The "courageous" Czechs and Poles will have to take their chances.

Did the "threat from Iran" go away? Not so's you'd notice.

The dawn of the nuclear Ayatollahs is perhaps only months away, and, just in case the Zionists or (please, no tittering) the formerly Great Satan is minded to take 'em out, Tehran will shortly be taking delivery of a bunch of S-300 anti-aircraft batteries from (ta-da!) Russia. Fancy that.

Joe Klein, the geostrategic thinker of Time magazine, concluded his analysis thus:

"This is just speculation on my part. But I do hope that this anti-missile move has a Russian concession attached to it, perhaps not publicly (just as the U.S. agreement to remove its nuclear missiles from Turkey was not make (sic) public during the Cuban Missile Crisis).

Honduras was the bellwether on how the Obama administration is going to operate. It will not be a pretty picture for democracies. Dictators, thugs and Communists are Obama’s soul mates.

Obama’s new missile strategy is in agreement with the military bigwigs. I’m not ready to pass judgment. Everything Obama does can’t be bad.

The “military bigwigs” like Robert Gates are vascillating, weak puppets who only care about their own jobs and pensions, nothing more it seems. Gates has changed his stripes more than any career felon.

A few years ago, the great scholar Bernard Lewis warned, during the debate on withdrawal from Iraq, that America risked being seen as "harmless as an enemy and treacherous as a friend."

In Moscow and Tehran, on the one hand, and Warsaw and Prague, on the other, they're drawing their own conclusions.

For shame.

Remember how Jimmy Carter professed himself to be in a state of shock after the USSR invaded Afghanistan:
A few short months after that, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. Carter expressed shock, saying "I can't believe he lied to me."
We might consider starting a pool here at FR to see who can most accurately guess the day on which Obammy will tell the SRM that he's "shocked" that one of our enemies has taken a major action that makes us look like patsies, or worse.

Obama’s new missile strategy is in agreement with the military bigwigs. I’m not ready to pass judgment.

After the announcement, both the Czech and Polish governments refused to take Secretary of State Hillary's call.

What does this tell you?

1. It means that neither the Poles nor the Czechs were advised of the decision beforehand.

2. And it means that the decision really does degrade their security. If it did otherwise, they would've been advised ahead of time and supported the action.

If the "military bigwigs" are, indeed, in favor of the action, they've done nothing to convince their opposite numbers in the Czech and Polish military. More likely, I suspect the reference is to "military bigwigs" who are bound to publicly support a Commander-in-Chief's order.

According to wikipedia (quoting a newspaper article from a few years ago), the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1980 was a set-up by Zbiginew Brezinski, with the intention to bog the USSR in its own Vietnam.

True or not, it can be taken that either ZB was a genius (like another Carter appointee, Paul Volcker) or that BO’s intentions are to bog the US down in the same mess that ultimately broke up the USSR.

"In 1998, Brzezinski was interviewed by the French newspaper Nouvel Observateur on the topic of Afghanistan. He revealed that CIA support for the mujaheddin had started before the 1979 Soviet invasion. Brzezinski saw the invasion as an opportunity to embroil the Soviet Union in a bloody conflict comparable to the US experience in Vietnam. He referred to this as the "Afghan Trap" and viewed the end of the Soviet empire as worth the cost of strengthening militant Islamic groups." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zbigniew_Brzeziński

The KGB has his birth certificate.

Next, big one-sided cuts in US missile defense and nuke weapons modernization. And obama hailed by the UN as if he was caesar.

Especially if your pre-emptive capitulations are as felicitously timed as the missile-defense announcement, stiffing the Poles on the 70th anniversary of their invasion by the Red Army.

Stiff them, then rub their noses in it, no doubt doing the Russkies' bidding.

Great move.

Nothing like waking up in the morning and asking yourself "Let's see....what's the stupidest, most despicable thing I can do today?"

In fairness to Carter (whom I despise), the Soviet Union “invaded” Afghanistan in the same sense that we “invaded” South Vietnam; they were there to prop up the government, as were we.

The Bahamas is probably contemplating an invasion of the eastern US now, after seeing Obama’s daughter with the foreign-sounding name wearing a peace T-shirt.
