As the job news grows ever darker -- according to the Labor Department unemployment has now hit a 26-year high of 9.7% -- a ray of light is shining from one unexpected quarter: the federal government.

A golden age of work for the government is just now dawning, according to a report released last week by the nonprofit Partnership for Public Service, a group in Washington that promotes government employment. There are several reasons: cyclical turnover; fresh demand in areas such as homeland security and veterans affairs, driven by the post-9/11 terrorist threat and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan; and the financial crisis, with the stimulus spending it has spurred.

Government jobs, with AA quotas, doing make-work that brings in no wealth, just a lifetime benefit and pension package.

Unreal.

Ah, yes - and what a better way to herald in Socialism than to make us the majority of Americans government employees.

Hint: There's more TRUTH in that statement than sarcasm.

The federal pension is not as good as it used to be (changed in the mid 80s I think):

It used to be (and still is, for those hired before the 80s) a cushy 80% of salary.

Now it is “only” between 25-44% of salary, depending on years of service.

How Orwellian

I want one of those jobs. I'll even come out of retirement.

How do I apply for the job of keeping an eye on FR? I assume it's a tele-commuting slot and rates a GS-12 or higher.

I think they have to take me I'm handicapped (by my government) and real old.

I promise to check in on FR 5 days a week

I know from talking to a buddy who works in the Belly of the Beast (GAO) that a LOT of FedGov employees were expected to retire right around 2010, and this predates the Obamanation election. Some of it was related to a bunch of folks that hired on to get in on the old pension plan, and some was just normal workforce expansion, but apparently the early 80s was a watershed time for bureaucrat hiring.

Now, with The One's desire to massively increase government and the retirement wave, I imagine a huge number of FedGov positions will be popping up in the next year or so.

I think it’s neat we are going to give ourselves a little down time while the Chinese busily overproduce and beg for customers. Hey, it’ll be great for as long as it last, right? Just print money, ship it to China and tell them to send over another batch of stuff to consume.

Me got wampum, big wampum. The US government is well practiced in the science of wampum.

The USA is the bronco and China the cowboy. We are trying to buck China off our back and force them to decouple their currency from ours. Great minds are gaming all of this.

And how does the money to support such jobs appear? It is provided by the tooth fairy. And very soon there are no more teeth and the money stops. Now we can all starve and enjoy living in the dark ages. Happy days are on the way.
