Fey wins Emmy for TV Palin spoof
BBC ^

Posted on 09/13/2009 7:19:04 AM PDT by traumer

Comedy actress Tina Fey has won an Emmy Award for her satirical portrayal of Republican vice-presidential contender Sarah Palin on Saturday Night Live.

Fey was honoured at the Creative Arts Primetime Emmys, which recognise technical and other achievements.

Pop star Justin Timberlake, who did not attend, won for playing various characters on Saturday Night Live.

There were also wins for Ellen Burstyn for Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Michael J Fox for Rescue Me.

"I always wanted one of these," Burstyn said, winning her first Emmy after being nominated five times.

'Living my dream'

In winning her award, Fey beat two contenders from her own comedy, 30 Rock, which had led the way with 22 nominations.

However, the show was only named winner of two categories - including best comedy, which it scooped last year too.

As Fey collected her trophy, she made reference to Palin, who resigned in July as governor of Alaska less than a year after she was chosen as vice-presidential contender.

"Mrs Palin is an inspiration to working mothers everywhere because she bailed on her job right before Fourth of July weekend. You are living my dream. Thank you, Mrs Palin."

Fey can use the trophy to gag herself after she eats. Sarah helped her career and bulimia.

I'm in the minority here but I loved all of Fey's spoofs. SNL is infamous for going after politicians. Just because we like Sarah doesn't mean she should be off the table. And by all accounts, Sarah was gracious and kind to Fey, with Sarah's daughter even offering to babysit Fey's daughter.

Comedy can often be over the top, as we've seen with Stewart and Maher. But Fey's Palin was completely within reason. Its just too bad so many people now believe the words Fey spoofed were actually said by Sarah. But that's their fault for being uninformed and naive- not Fey's.

Ironic how Fey won an award for portraying a woman she said she despised. And now she has that big old trophy sitting on a shelf at home to remind her that.

Sarah will have the last-laugh.
But don't be too hard on the television folks, especially the Emmy's. It a very challenging job for the Award Judges to find any morsel of creativity or quality on TV today. They have a tough job. Nowadays they give awards to anyone for anything.

As an entertainer Fey did an excellent job of parodying Sarah. Audiences loved it without regard to the politics. Fey’s a talented entertainer and deserves the recognition of that talent from her industry and the public.

SNL is infamous for going after politicians.

I can hardly wait for their hilarious Emmy-level take-downs of Obama, Rahm Emanuel, Carol Browner and some of the other comedic figures in the current administration.

Excuse me for being snobbish, but I can't bring myself to watching SNL these days. The real funny stuff passed by years ago. Anyways, have they got themselves an Obama impersonator? Do they goof on him with any real zeal.

Fey's job was that of a political hack assassinating the character of Gov. Palin. Fey stated unequivocally that she is against Palin and accordingly did her part in the liberal smear machine to define the public image of Palin as a grotesque caricature.

Her portrayal was mean spirited, agenda-driven and full of contempt and in bad taste. SNL went after Palin's children and portrayed her as a bigot and antisemite. The spoofing of the other candidates was in good nature and in no way comparable.

I have not forgotten how the NEWS media showed Fey's clips maliciously blended with Palin's interviews... obfuscating the border between "satire" and reality.

And by all accounts, Sarah was gracious and kind to Fey, with Sarah's daughter even offering to babysit Fey's daughter.

Going on SNL was one of the few real mistakes Palin made during the campaign. If you have seen her interview with John Ziegler, she didn't knew most of the SNL Fey low-blow "jokes" on her family when going to this pathetic show. That her daughter would babysit Fey's daughter only shows what an lovely and goodhearted family the Palins are... it says nothing about Fey.

Great SNL Political Spoofs:

1) Dana Carvey of Ross Perot and GH Bush
2) Will Farrel of GW Bush
3) Amy Proehler of Hillary Clinton
4) Jon Lovitz of Mike Dukakis
5) Tina Fey on Sarah Palin
6) Dan Akroyd of Jimmy Carter
7) darrel Hammond of Bill Clinton
8) Phil Hartman of Bill Clinton
9) Chevy Chase of Ford
10) Whoever did Nancy Pelosi...

JMO....

I wholeheartedly disagree. Sarah's appearance on SNL was a brilliant move. It showed she can laugh at herself, even when others are laughing at her. Of course, the largest viewer numbers in years also showed that people had genuine interest in Sarah and whether she's hold 'em or fold 'em. She not only held 'em, she hit it out of the park.

Anyone who uses comedy shows such as SNL, John Stewart, David Letterman, or Bll Maher are unfortunate morons. And there are millions out there.

As for Fey, after she actually met Sarah Palin, she tempered her words and said nice things about her, as did Lorne Michaels. And let's be real. Anyone who expects anyone on SNL to come out for a Republican, let alone a conservative like Sarah, is expecting something that will never happen. Sarah knew exactly what she was up against when going on SNL- and did it anyway- with alacrity, humor and grace. I just Sarah supporters could recognize it too.

I agree. I especially enjoyed Alec Baldwin's comment ‘you are much hotter in person’ to Palin. He actually sounded sincere. Once they met her they weren't as able to be so mean. I truly doubt the SNL crew will soften their impersonations of Republicans. Their audience of Leftys wouldn't watch anymore.

This just in: J. Fred Muggs wins an Emmy Award Banana for his impersonation of our current President.

Muggs was humble during his acceptance speech, noting that it wasn't much of a "stretch" for him to play the role that won him the award, what with simply reading words off a TelePrompter in front of adoring audiences.
