From what I hear them say, a lot of people on the left, like Dean, agree with the comments Jones has made regarding American racism, prejudice, imperialism, exploitation of minorities, brutality towards third-world countries, etc. They just phrase their ideas a little less directly.

So to them, Jones was indeed the object of a "smear" because there was nothing wrong with what he said. The mistake Jones made was that he was too explicit - should have used some "nuance," which would have given him some cover - like "taken out of context," "misinterpreted," etc.
