Illegal immigration is depleting California's human capital and ravaging its economy. California's financial unraveling has prompted a long overdue debate about taxes, regulation, and government spending. But what the state continues to ignore is the IRREPARABLE damage that nearly 30 years of uncontrolled illegal immigration has achieved. The influx has been composed of the poorly educated, the unskilled, and the illiterate. Such immigrants will soon dominate the state's overall population and politics. In 2005, the California K-12 school system was 48.5 percent Hispanic and 31 percent white. By now it's above 50 percent Hispanic. UC Santa Barbara estimates high school drop outs in 2007 alone will cost the state $24.2 billion in future economic losses. Even those who graduate "do not meet college requirements or satisfy prerequisites for most jobs that pay a living wage." California's educational system, once easily the best in the country, is today near the bottom of the 50 states as judged by the National Assessment of Educational Progress in math, science, reading and writing. It has the highest adult illiteracy in the United States - 23 percent.

What the nation has to decide soon is whether CA is worth keeping in the union. If it indeed is worth doing so, then we have to be ready to take drastic action to change the situation there.
Shrug. As long as politicians see illegals as a source of potential votes this problem will never be solved.
There is no fixing it. Washington DC wants the USA to look like Mexico. They live behind huge walls in fancy estates while jetting around the globe dining on whatever please them and the rest of us live in squalor.
Kalifonia should be in FULL REVOLT.
In 10 years I think Mexico will start trying to keep their people OUT.
We reap what we sow.
59% of the people of California tried to nip this in the bud in 1994 with California Proposition 187. One liberal judge shot it down and Gray Davis would not pursue it to the supreme court.
This article was also posted on the NPR website. Wonder why..this information is highly classified and is embargoed by the Govt Controled Media. No one will report this bald facts.
The growing illiterate population of CA is not going to pull the state out of it’s death spiral. At some point the white liberals and legal immigrant’s need to pull their head’s out and understand what is happening.
The white liberal parents out here are even fleeing the public schools or moving into whiter districts. You just can’t put your kid into a grade school where half the kids don’t speak english.
The REAL abomination, which has loomed large in each state for decades are the national and multinational companies and corporations who demand a constant source of cheap labor, actually recruit in Mexico, Central and So. America, "fix these people up" with cars, apartments, etc. so that they are able to live here permanently, raise their offspring to continue the "cheap labor" source.
The true tragedy besides the millions of Americans who work at unskilled and minimally skilled labor being taxed through the nose to pay the cost of illegal aliens in their midst -- but also the people who pay coyotes to smuggle them into America (sometimes besides being used as mules to also smuggle in drugs, weapons, etc.) are raped, beaten and left are to die in trucks and vans and if they survive, are hurt, injured on the job, are treated as bad if not worse than black slaves from Africa.
Think of the companies who continue to do this as mere slave traders, inhumane slave "overseers."
It would seem that we fought a war, killed more Americans than in any other war and now have "sanctioned" slavery and slave trading in the name of profit.
Ping to “discouraged Latinos who won’t vote GOP.”
I wonder why not?
Excellent article. It explains how California, once the Golden State, became a Third World enclave in the space of a generation.
Thanks for the heads-up........as Cali goes so goes the nation. Frightening.
“Alexiev further notes that “even after 20 years in the country, most illegal aliens and their children remain poor, unskilled and are a new PERMANENT UNDERCLASS.” Harvard scholar George Borjas shows that over 40 percent of immigrant families receive welfare and ALSO exponentially increase public expenditures on health care, education, and prisons.”
Arne Duncan, the head of ‘education’ for Obama was just on CBS. He talked about the drop outs in the hispanic/minority student body....but never mentioned immigration. We have diluted our society/education down to the lowest common denominator.
“as Cali goes so goes the nation. Frightening”
I was doing some genealogy the other day. My parents met in Pomona, Ca. in the early 1940’s. That city is now 70% ‘latino’, mostly illegal and illiterate.

Absolutely right! Duncan is typical of liberal Democrats. They refuse to enforce the law and then pretend to be concerned when those who ought to be here in the first place are bankrupting public school districts and hospitals, running the drug cartel, and filling our prisons.
Thanks for the tip. By the way, Tancredo is my favorite ex-pol. He and Bay Buchanan are still fighting the good fight for secure borders - are you familiar with their site?
