Japan’s LDP faces crushing defeat, says poll

In what would be a historic defeat for the ruling Liberal Democratic party, the poll suggested that the DPJ was likely to secure more than 300 of the 480 seats in the lower house election on August 30.

The LDP’s presence could shrink to a little more than 100 seats in the house, compared with its 300 seats now, the poll suggested.

i glanced at wiki and the party thats going to win sounds like a left wing party, but the current party in power is a socialist party too. Remember its the current party thats been in power for these past decades that were in favor of bailouts, which has lead to decades of malaise

DPJ’s liberal. They already have the upper house. LPD’s conservative.

Geithners role models are in China I think.

The problem is the other party is going to be worse?

New York Times, of all places, has an article on how the Japanese bailouts failed, how the people view them as a waste and a power grab by the Liberal Democratic Party and how Geithner thinks Japan didn't spend enough:

Japan's Big-Works Stimilus

I can't figure out Mr. Nobel Prize Krugman and Timmy Turbo Tax when they propose Japan as a model. When Japan spent trillions and run up huge deficits, it had a thriving export business. A positive balance of trade. We don't. Japan didn't have to sell treasuries to buy oil. Japan bought oil, US Treasuries and whatever else it wanted. All that never seems to factor into their rhetoric. They act as if these facts do not exist.

Geithner was a financial attaché in Japan when its economy collapsed and it entered a lost decade. Those were Timmy’s formative years. He loved watching the Liberal Democrats consolidate power in Tokyo and in their party by spending trillions on public works. Probably thought he was living a Japanese version of the New Deal.

That doesn’t seem to be working out too well for the LPD right now

LDP has got to be one of the most corrupt political parties I have seen on the planet (that are in the conservative or even moderate orbit). They are really terrible.

That is not to say the DPJ will do much better.

Those labels do not apply. Japan has basically been under one-party rule since WWII so LPD is broken up in various factions. No one faction controls everything, each has a piece of the pie. A natural extension to the old Samurai feudal system.

Not many people in Japan know very much about the DPJ, except that they aren't the LDP, except that they are... sorta, because so many LDP stalwarts have jumped ship for the DPJ, including the daughter of former Prime Minister Tanaka.

I can sympathize with so many Japanese, including my own sweetie, who have really had it up to their ears with the LDP’s business as usual Nagatacho antics, but if they are really looking for a change with the DPJ, I think they are going to be just as disappointed as the Obama voters.

DPJ is making a lot of promises, including cutting C02 by 25 percent over a certain number of years — which even the most gullible voter recognizes as election hyperbole, but they have released very little in the way of specifics and what few numbers they have released do not add up very well.

Oh well... lets hope that hopeychangey works our better for Nihon that it has for America and the rest of the world.

I fail to see a big difference. Does the DPJ think spending even more money will help the economy? Don’t they know that CO2 reduction would be counterproductive?

There isn’t really. It’s mostly the same old geezers and the same old promises — most of which are sure to be forgotten 15 minutes after they get elected.

I haven’t been watching the political situation in Japan much these days. What are the implications of this change. (Other than the obvious change of party control)
