Amid the orchestrated phony protests over President Barack Obama’s health care reform efforts, a new report by the Southern Poverty Law Center, SPLC, documents another threat to the health of the Black community and the nation’s stability: rising racism within right-wing militias.
In its report entitled “Return of the Militias,” the Southern Poverty Law Center points out that the militia movement, that faded in the 1990s, is back and that “One big difference from the militia movement of the 1990s is that the face of the federal government — the enemy that almost all parts of the extreme right see as the primary threat to freedom — is now Black. And the fact that the president is an African American has injected a strong racial element into even those parts of the radical right, like the militias, that in the past were not primarily motivated by race hate. Contributing to the racial animus have been fears on the far right about the consequences of Latino immigration.”
The report also noted that “At the same time, ostensibly mainstream politicians and media pundits have helped to spread Patriot and related propaganda, from conspiracy theories about a secret network of U.S. concentration camps to wholly unsubstantiated claims about the president's country of birth.”

He’s not an African American. He’s an African Canadian. Don’t you read the Globe? But it would be easy to substantiate the Obama camp’s claims that he’s an American. Just show us his real birth certificate. What are you afraid of?

That’s what happens when you make people disappear. They get real PO’d and pick up guns, and then they find friends, drink beer and complain about things, which makes them a militia.

Not everyone, of course ... many of those that voted for Mr. Obama will agree with this screed. I have relatives in New Jersey that would “man the barricades” with the Black Panthers and ACORN. But I mean what used to be labeled the “Silent Majority” in the 60’s. That “Silent Majority” isn’t so silent, anymore. They are VERY well-armed, and outnumber all of the armies of history. Do the 13% REALLY want to go there? Rather, they should kiss the ground and thank their deity that their ancestor was put on that slave ship.

I don’t believe that the people in these “militias” are the same as the people showing up at townhall meetings. The SPLC is vague as to who these militia people are, how many there are, and what they’re affiliated with.
If someone is really planning violence, that’s a problem. But I can’t see lumping a big chunk of the population together and calling them all racist militias.
