Obama Claim of AARP Endorsement 'Inaccurate'
Fox News. ^ | Wednesday, August 12, 2009 | AP

Posted on 08/12/2009 6:00:59 AM PDT by Pistolshot

A group usually seen as one of Barack Obama's allies in the health care debate -- AARP -- says the president went too far Tuesday when he said the seniors lobby had endorsed the legislation pending in Congress.

AARP is sensitive to the issue because polls show that Medicare beneficiaries are worried their health care program will be cut to subsidize coverage for the uninsured.

At the town hall in Portsmouth, N.H., Obama said, "We have the AARP onboard because they know this is a good deal for our seniors." He added, "AARP would not be endorsing a bill if it was undermining Medicare."

But Tom Nelson, AARP's chief operating officer, said, "Indications that we have endorsed any of the major health care reform bills currently under consideration in Congress are inaccurate."

Like Obama, AARP wants action this year to cover the uninsured and restrain health care costs, but the organization has refrained from endorsing legislation. Nelson said AARP would not endorse a bill that reduces Medicare benefits.

A spokesman said the Medicare cuts that have been proposed so far would not affect benefits.

Obama assailed "wild misrepresentations" of his health care plan Tuesday during the town hall, taking on the role of fact-checker-in-chief for his top domestic priority. It's a strategy he will employ at two more town halls this week in Montana and Colorado, and on the White House Web site.

To that end, the Obama-aligned Democratic National Committee is running health care overhaul ads nationally on cable channels and in spots the president will visit, joining a chorus of ads that has become a cacophony over a problem that has vexed Washington for decades.

AARP is just as scared as the rest of the Dihms. One of their spokesmen was on O'Reilly denying that AARP had endorsed anything.

He never really answered the question BO put to him.

Glenn Beck had an AARP spokesman on last week who was defending the plan as great for seniors. Apparently they’re getting a lot of flak from their members.

AARP is lying. They’ve been running ads in support of health care reform.

I sent them my membership cancellation with the comment that they no longer reflect my views, and that I’d rejoin if and when they’d take a stand AGAINST Obamacare.

How many AARP constituents are “uninsured?”

Nine out of ten Medicare recipients have private, supplementary insurance to cover what Medicare doesn't.

By 2018, less than 10 years from now, Medicare Part A will be running a deficit of close to $100 billion. General revenue contributions for Medicare Parts B and D that year are now projected to be $364 billion. Consequently, the deficit for Medicare alone that year will be close to $500 billion, and that assumes a scheduled reduction, which Congress will surely reverse, in doctor and hospital reimbursements of more than 20 percent.

AARP is treading on very shaky ground! I didn’t like their endorsements during the election, and I certainly don’t like them being one of 0bama’s lap dogs.

AARP is probably getting a lot of cancelations due to their obviuous being in bed with Obama on healthcare “reform”. I think Obama will show AARP as the obvious partisan group that it has always been, greatly weakening it in the process. This is similar to the way Bill Clinton just about was the indirect cause of the destruction of the credibility of NOW as a “non-partisan” group.

I hope there’s another group that can effectively compete against AARP, and could profit from this episode.

Instead of finding ways for people to purchase more private insurance and take the burden off Govt- obama wants govt to take the whole program- and convince people it saves the govt money....!

Lots of seniors were born at night- but it wasn't last night.

Has AARP authored its own proposed version of the plan? I mean like man, they’re about to unleash a million dollars’ worth of male bovine generated fertilizer on us, and to exactly what end is this? Won’t everyone think they’re boosting Obamacare?

Technically AARP is not endorsing ObamaCare. But for all practical purposes they are. I would like to see the back room deal between AARP and Obama. I’m betting that AARP has been promised a major role in the development and administration of Government Healthcare. That’s the Chicago Way.

If the AARP membership was actually sitting on this “city hall” it would make a bit of sense. But no, the headquarters is dictating to these grey hairs what they ought to want.

"AARP is lying. They’ve been running ads in support of health care reform."

AARP lies all the time and they've been doing it forever. I couldn't believe some of the crap they used to send my parents. When I saw what they were all about I knew right then that I will never be a member or their group nor contribute even one penny to them.

We know that there are secrets in DC.

So I suspect what has happened is that AARP has decided to be neutral in public but support the health plan behind the scenes in order to get their part of the stimulus money.

Obummer, the Fascist, I suspect has been told by his flunkies that the AARP supports but forgot to tell him they don't want it advertised.

If AARP is playing both ends against the middle, which they probably are, they will screw themselves. It is much harder to do so today with instant news over the internet and great outfits like FR putting news up almost the instant it happens.

He never really answered the question BO put to him.

Bill got an email on that last night and Bill said that the guy did answer--that they support some aspects but not the full bill yet.

Apparently they’re getting a lot of flak from their members.

And they should! Support for this bill is an utter betrayal of the AARP members in particular and of any retiree (not to mention us the people in general, though AARP representation is not that wide).
