It's the kind of number that makes you stop and say, "What?!!!!!!!!"
230 miles per gallon.
That's the fuel economy GM expects the electric Chevy Volt to deliver when it comes out late next year. The company made the announcement this morning in Detroit and already skeptics, fans, and the general public are debating if the Volt's mega-fuel efficiency will be a "game changer" for the industry and General Motors.
My opinion: if the Volt can consistently deliver anything close to that mileage, it will go a long ways toward removing the sting of the expected $40,000 price.
The skeptics believe Volts mileage will not come anywhere close to what GM is promising. After all, the mileage on many cars and trucks is, in real world driving, well below what the company promises. In addition, critics of the Volt say that with gas being relatively cheap, there will be limited demand for the car.

So... this thing must ACTUALLY get 230 miles per gallon with no additional energy added to the system.

Everyone knows that electricity does not cost a penny and does not add any greenhouse gases to our atmosphere. Pay $40k for an instant clunker and drive it for free forever
I’ll be interested to see how they “solve” some of the problems inherent with electric cars. Though, I have to share some of the skepticism of others on this thread.
$20,000 extra cost @ 5% interest = $1000/year. That would still buy a bit of gas. (Note to Obama: Better get busy raising the price of gas!)

If the government (as in Government Motors) does not have to follow the Constitution or other laws, why should they bother to follow the 1st and 2nd Laws of Thermodynamics?
but under his highness Obamagoon I, electricity rates “ will necessarily skyrocket”, so an elctric car will cost more to run.

Was watching “Brooke Knows Best” on VH1 the other day and Brooke and Hulk Hogan took an electric car out for a drive in Miami. The thing ran out of juice and died right on a busy street. People were honking and Brooke had to get out and push the thing to the side of the road. Hilarious.

What is the cost to run it on its source of power electricity?

They can hype 230 MPG all they want.Does not mean the car is good or cost effective.
When I’m walking, I get an infinite number of miles per gallon. My bicycle gets nearly that mileage, but I have to pour more water into my mouth when I’m riding, so my mileage suffers to only 1,056,234,123 miles per gallon (of water).
This has to be that carburetor that the car companies “stole” from that guy that claimed he could get 60mpg years ago.
You might enjoy a bit of heat in the cabin on those zero degree mornings, too.
Since 52% of any household electricity used to recharge the Volt comes from coal, instead of miles per gallon, the news should be announced in miles per pound of coal.

All of the above, plus when you trade it in, sell it, or replace the battery pack every several years you will be hit with a battery disposal tax of thousands of dollars.
Is that a Vega or an Astra? I had a Vega. They were fun to drive but basically a piece of junk.
