Gitmo detainees should not come to Leavenworth
Kansas City Star ^ | August 8, 2009 | Sen. Pat Roberts

As a former Marine, I know that the men and women of our armed forces, including those at Fort Leavenworth, are more than capable of securing these terrorists. In fact, they already secure them very well at Guantanamo. The real threat lies beyond the terrorists themselves. For places like Leavenworth, there is a virtual top 10 list of external threats ... 2. Security experts estimate that Fort Leavenworth would need to acquire 2,000 privately owned acres of land by eminent domain to establish a stand-off zone around the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks, which is situated near the perimeter. Imagine the lawsuits, time and money it will take to acquire the land. ... 5. By law, military prisoners cannot be held with the terrorists they fight on the battlefield. If just one terrorist detainee was moved to Fort Leavenworth, all 450 military offenders currently there would have to be transferred, most likely to Federal Bureau of Prisons facilities. ... 9. Security in the community of Leavenworth is, by law, beyond the protection of the Army, which forbids the military from taking on police roles outside of the post. As our enemies work to acquire greater means for inflicting even higher numbers of casualties on Americans, and in an era when extremists routinely seize schools, destroy hospitals and use civilians as cover, it would be impossible to fully secure the citizens of Leavenworth from outside threats.

One plan the Obama administration is considering is to bring the Gitmo detainees into both Ft Leavenworth, KS, and the state maximum security (not a Supermax) in Standish, MI, as a "court within a prison." Yet it would takes months (more likely years) for the federal government to acquire the land needed to create the stand-off distance needed to protect either facility from external attacks. Oh, by the way, Obama's deadline is currently 5 months and 12 days away. Even if by some miracle they could acquire the land and complete the construction, that would not mitigate the danger to the civilian communities of Leavenworth and Standish (and the civilians living and working on Ft Leavenworth); we'd be housing the rock stars of al Qaeda and terrorists would seek to make statements in those communities. Why move them to the United States at all when Gitmo is now the most secure detention facility, Leavenworth and Standish would merely become Gitmo North, and Constitutional protections that automatically attach to detainees brought here?

Don't forget the most important reason that no Club Gitmo detainee should be moved to any prison... the second any of these terrorists touch US soil, the ACLU and other liberals will ensure they are out on bail, acquitted of any charges, and living amongst us as quickly as possible.

Osama Bin Laden himself could not have come up with a better plan to have hardcore violent terrorists enter the USA.

A lib/progressive judge would "find" rights for the prisoners and set them free based upon their empathy for them. Setting them free means they would be free to attack us.

Given them conditional rights is the worst mistake we can make. Those who attack other countries, outside the principles of the Geneva Conventions should be discouraged at all costs.
