Mel Martinez resigning

Sen. Mel Martinez (R-Fla.) will be stepping down from the Senate, according to several senior Republican sources familiar with his thinking.

He made the announcement at a morning staff meeting, where he said he will not be returning to the Senate after the August recess.

The decision adds a twist to the Florida Senate race. Gov. Charlie Crist (R-Fla.) is the frontrunner for the Republican nomination, and he would be tasked with appointing a candidate to fill the seat until Martinez’s term expires in 2011.

Nice going, Mel ... vote for your wise latina and quit ...

I doubt Crist could appoint himself.

But, he could probably resign, then the Lt. Gov could appoint Crist to the Senate seat after being promoted to Governor.

But, that would be a very bad idea. When a Democrat governor did exactly that in the 70's, it resulted in the Minnesota Massacre.

In the subsequent election, both Senate seats and the Governor's office switched from Democrat to Republican.

Good Riddance. The only problem with this is that Crist gets to appoint another RINO to replace him.

Maybe he could appoint a die hard conservative (in hopes that he could easily beat him in the election).

Yes, well...I wouldn’t be surprised, frankly, if Crist announced a party change...the guy is a chameleon...and that is being kind.

I regret my vote for him. He is not at all a conservative. He is an opportunist. Same for Mel.

I know Jeb gets grief here because of his last name, but he was an honest man and governor. I wish HE would run for Senate. (No offense to Marco Rubio who is also a decent man.)

not willing to face the music. No loss for us, even if they do appoint a democrat at this point, Mel hasn’t answered his phones since the amnesty fiasco. We have no representation in the senate......
