Mel Martinez resigning

Sen. Mel Martinez (R-Fla.) will be stepping down from the Senate, according to several senior Republican sources familiar with his thinking.

He made the announcement at a morning staff meeting, where he said he will not be returning to the Senate after the August recess.

The decision adds a twist to the Florida Senate race. Gov. Charlie Crist (R-Fla.) is the frontrunner for the Republican nomination, and he would be tasked with appointing a candidate to fill the seat until Martinez’s term expires in 2011.

~~~~
Nice going, Mel ... vote for your wise latina and quit ...
I doubt Crist could appoint himself.
But, he could probably resign, then the Lt. Gov could appoint Crist to the Senate seat after being promoted to Governor.
But, that would be a very bad idea. When a Democrat governor did exactly that in the 70's, it resulted in the Minnesota Massacre.
In the subsequent election, both Senate seats and the Governor's office switched from Democrat to Republican.
Good Riddance. The only problem with this is that Crist gets to appoint another RINO to replace him.
Maybe he could appoint a die hard conservative (in hopes that he could easily beat him in the election).
Yes, well...I wouldn’t be surprised, frankly, if Crist announced a party change...the guy is a chameleon...and that is being kind.
I regret my vote for him. He is not at all a conservative. He is an opportunist. Same for Mel.
I know Jeb gets grief here because of his last name, but he was an honest man and governor. I wish HE would run for Senate. (No offense to Marco Rubio who is also a decent man.)
Wasn't it about time between being in the Senate and going to the Lobbyist side on "K Street"?
I didn’t know he was a Republican.
Always through he was a Democrat.
Same as McQueeg, it always surprises me when I hear him called “the Republican Senator.”
It’s some kind of cultural dissonance.
FNC just reported “Martinez will not be returning to the Senate at the end of the August Recess..”
Don’t know if that qualifies as ‘confirmation’, but it’s out there....
He must be in trouble.
Is he quitting so that he can retain his (royalty type) 'benefits' from the senate before he is indicted or something?
I don't trust any of these bastards anymore, R or D.
Who does something like this? Resign from the United States Senate with essentially no "notice"? This guy is so pathetic. He is one of the worst senators Florida has ever elected from either party. And then there was his putrid stint as party chairman...that was the period when the GOP basically lost its way. Good riddance, el senor Martinez. Vaya con carne.
Just mentioned on Fox News
Senator Illegal Alien (er Martinez) is leaving early....will not return after summer recess
Hopefully a non-RINO is picked...would not be surprised if Crist picks himself.
Right now there is no real conservative candidate in the mix for Martinez’s seat
