Michelle Obama's performance as first lady is getting high marks from her predecessor, Laura Bush.
Speaking to The Associated Press after a change of command ceremony for the USS Texas submarine in Connecticut, Bush says she's watched the current first lady from afar and is impressed.

Bless her heart.
Mrs Bush is the epitome of grace and class.
Oh yes, Michelle Obama is just awesome. AFK, vomiting.
‘Mrs Bush is the epitome of grace and class.’
No surprise here. She’s awesome.
From afar is indeed the best way to watch her.
Up close and you get less impressed:
The Bush family needs to stop worrying so much about being “nice” and start being honest. Both 0bamas are a pox on our country and are not deserving of praise.
This is just another example of why I’ll never vote for another Bush in my life. They keep thinking that if they’re just “nice” to the opposition they’ll be respected and admired and then liked by the Dems. It’ll never happen because Dems don’t work that way. Bush family members don’t seem capable of learning that.
I don’t think we have ever heard Mrs Bush say a negative thing about anyone. If someone close to me too the sort of abuse and derision directed at her husband, I wouldn’t be able to remain so serene about it. Not surprising at all that she would have kind words for her successor.
Laura is first and foremost, a lady. She walks in beauty, kindness, class and grace. She would never, ever utter an unkind word, unlike her harridan predecessor and successor.
Yes, Laura’s a nice lady. But frankly this is eyewash.
Better if she had followed the ancient rule: “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.”
It’s not Laura’s job to attack Michelle. But neither is it her job to defend her. It’s not as if Michelle doesn’t have US, People, Time, Atlantic, and everyone else saying how wonderful she is.

Some kind of funky urban survival skill, I guess. Tied in with the rampant passive-aggressiveness that passes for politeness here.
Not saying Mrs. Bush is like that...just saying.
Those words are so sweet from a decent lady-—but my teeth are developing cavities by just listening to that sugary syrup.
Michelle needs to copy more than just First Lady Laura Bush’s hairstyle.
What else would she say?? After all, she ISN’T a Clinton!!!
The Associated Press know an easy target when they see one.
When did they ever chase after Hillary Clinton for nice words about Laura Bush when she was First Lady?
Laura Bush should have asked them that.
Like Melanie in Gone with the Wind, Laura Bush seems incapable of thinking ill of someone. I guess she is far more a lady than I am. I calls ‘em as I sees ‘em.
Well, being nice never did anything to help Bush or push his agenda.
Secondly, why does Laura Bush (whom I respect more than any other first lady) have to say anything even? What in the world is she IMPRESSED BY???????
She is being gracious, as always.
Amen!!
Was she ASKED her opinion of Michele???
OR...did she VOLUNTEER IT????? If she was asked I could see her bending words to be nice. However, if she volunteered it is just not wise. But then again...Bush, Sr. and Ole willie were close friends. Go figure. Guess I have more aliengence to my family than those in public office...especially once I am out of the lime light. I think the only really, honest, fortright person is First Lady BARBARA BUSH and her daughter.
Bush never learsn. Now Obama is beginning to blame him and yet the Bush’s still speak so nicely? Sorry...I don’t agree. Guess I should say they are bigger and nicer people than me and mine but I won’t because they are not.
“The Bush family needs to stop worrying so much about being nice and start being honest.”
My thoughts from the very beginning. She is making the situation worse.
They need to keep their mouths shut and go away forever if they won’t help us in this awful situation we are in instigated by Clinton and then Bush.
The Bushes know very well the cheeky Kenyan bastard is not a legal U.S citizen and yet they defend them.
Because you call them as you see them does not mean you are not a lady. It just means you are honest. I made mention of that in my own post.
Laura Bush is a first class LADY. I have no problems with her praising Michelle. For those Freepers who are so far gone into ODS that it bothers them, I say, get a friggin life, sheesh...
Laura Bush may be “nice”, but she did NOTHING in her 8 years in the White House. Whereas Hillary Clinton was practically a Co-President.
Oh, really?
What else would she say. Laura Bush is the ultimate Lady. She has class galore.
Last I noticed, Laura Bush's name wasn't on the ballot. We didn't elect her to do anything. If she did do something, as Hitlery Clinton allegedly did, then she was acting outside of her role.
Further proof that Mrs. Laura Bush is a gracious woman.
All that tells me is that perhaps you should consider moving out of New York.
;^)
So nicness is more important than truth?
I dissent.
No way is a lady of Laura's class impressed by the tasteless behavior of her successor.
you know it’s true love when somehow you can put up with it, perhaps even find it endearing.
Yep. More fluff from a liberal Rino. Just like this remark:
Article: Laura Bush glad Obama picked woman for high court
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2267090/posts
“”I think she sounds like a winner and a good nominee,” Bush said of Sonia Sotomayor, the federal appeals judge Obama picked.”
Sums it up perfectly.
Q: What do you think of the job that MO is doing?
A: Will you look at those flowers over there? They’re really quite lovely. Sorry, what did you ask me? Gotta run.
Laura Bush may be nice, but she did NOTHING in her 8 years in the White House. Whereas Hillary Clinton was practically a Co-President.
Nothing? How about Helping America's Youth initiative and Foundation For America's Libraries. At least she wasn't tossing ash trays, making antisemitic remarks about the help and facilitating communism to our country.
LOL - I’m guessing any praise from a Bush is just infuriating to MO. She probably sees it as being condescending.
Has Laura been hitting the sauce with George?
Laura Bush is proving she’s an idiot just like her husband
