WASHINGTON They came, they met, they drank. They did not apologize.
The much-anticipated beer summit of President Obama, the Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr., and Sgt. James Crowley of the Cambridge Police Department in Massachusetts took place Thursday night, accompanied by minute-by-minute reporting from the White House press corps, countdown clocks from the cable news networks, and a last-minute addition by the White House in the form of Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr.
After 10 days of near nonstop news coverage of a case that prompted a thousand news stories about race, the men sat down for less than an hour at a table across from the Oval Office under a magnolia tree.
What you had today was two gentlemen who agreed to disagree on a particular issue, a poised and smooth Sergeant Crowley said in a 15-minute news conference after the session. We didnt spend too much time dwelling on the past, and we decided to look forward.

This exercise in futility cannot have helped Barack Obama’s popularity with the non-liberal, non-black electorate. Someone has mentioned how old Obama has looked recently.
In my whole life I have NEVER seen a POTUS act so... un-presidential...
....the men sat down for less than an hour at a table across from the Oval Office under a magnolia tree.
Would it be better if it was a coconut tree?
“Unity. One Beer At A Time.” That’s one hell of a slogan but this is going to get expensive and take a very long time. Sorry B.O.! You might want to come up with another technique.
Beneath the surface , Obama is a very angry black man: Jeremiah Wright with a Harvard degree.
Apologizing? That would be bowing to Whitey and this country’s history of racism (in BHO’s view).
What policeman ever has to meet with the CRIMINAL he arrests? A new low in policing. I think obama is disgusting.
Yup, Obama is laughable.....but I am not laughing.
You must not have been around when Clinton was President then. ;-)
Or Kennedy.
Or Carter...
Funny, they're all Democrats.
This whole episode has caused serious damage to both Obama’s popularity and his political clout. Thus, I am quite enjoying the entire charade.
Wow those chairs in that picture look really low. Everyone looks like they are practically sitting on the ground. Obama looks like he’s *lying* on the ground.
They all look uncomfortable.
Obama knows that the visual image stinks from a political standpoint. But there was no way to back out of it. Where’s that infectious Obama grin?
Nothing stopped Crowley from refusing. If he looks goofy it’s his own fault.
You correctly wrote, “This exercise in futility cannot have helped Barack Obamas popularity with the non-liberal, non-black electorate”
This crappy symbolism over substance photo op is what the liberal dumbing down of America has come to. Without knowing a damn thing about was supposed to be accomplished, talked about, apologies made and by whom, this whole thing was a Rodney King....”see boys and girls we can all get along when our president graciously asks us to”.
People in the rest of the world watching this have got to be wondering....”If this is what happens in the most powerful country in the world, we are in a heap of crap”
Otherwise, Mahalo for your understanding
Crowley played it for all its worth. Good for him! He made Obama look ridiculous and like a racist.
That’s because a real POTUS does not act like a community organizer (ie read commie lib racist).
It takes a village to spin a gaffe.
