Since not everyone realizes that the police report was a cleaned up version of what Gates actually said, I thought I would post a link to this interview.

VAN SUSTEREN: What was said about his mother?

GIATOPPO: Well, it appears that Professor Gates may have engaged in high school type tactics of, Your mama, your mother, and this, that and the other, things that would do when you were bantering as a high school kid. And to actually come out and insinuate that his mother has any role in this, and what his inference was, was...

VAN SUSTEREN: In what way, though? I'm having a hard time -- the mother reference.

GIATOPPO: Well, Greta, maybe in Wisconsin, they didn't use the term ragging on each other. Maybe they did. But this is...

VAN SUSTEREN: We were -- we were rough on each other!

GIATOPPO: Well, all right. All right.

VAN SUSTEREN: But I mean, it's, like, what did he say about his mother? It's just that...

GIATOPPO: Jimmy said, If you want to speak to me, you need to come outside. I'm not going to stay in your home. I'm leaving. And he made reference, I'll talk to your mama outside. In other words, giving him the rag, offensive term of your mother. And your mama this and that. Crossed the line there. So an apology owed. He owes it to Jimmy's mother, anyways, to bring her into this because God knows (INAUDIBLE) her out on this, too.

I don’t understand the mama comments either and I’m not from Wisconsin.

Just for the record, if you want to have a vicious fight with an Hispanic, reference something about his/her mom. Works every time.

I really hope that Zero's voters and supporters are sooooo proud of their vote for our ‘post-racial’ half Black President. He and his friends are birds of a feather. What a mess for our wonderful country!

Maybe this is a male/female thing. I’m female. I don’t get the “mama” comment. I need someone to spell this out to me like I’m a nine year old child. I understand one shouldn’t disrespect another’s mother, but what exactly, is it that everyone else seems to get about this that I don’t?

It's enough for me that it was described as obscene.

It’s the old “Your Mother is so....” line.

Said to insult, and inflame,

He said it was obscene so I figure it was an allegation about something his mother did.

The worst thing we would say was your mother wears combat boots and she dresses you funny.

The only thing I heard/read was that he said, “I’ll talk to your mama outside.” I don’t even know what that is suppose to mean. I’m not at all defending Gates. It sounds like there was more to it than that and I was just wondering what exactly he said. I’m a mom and I’m sure those types of (obscene) words would offend my children more than they would me, even though they were attributed to me. I’m just curious. It sounds like there are fighting words I’m not aware of.

It’s a way of escalating an argument by bringing a person’s mother into it in an insulting, derogatory manner. It used to be “Your mother wears army boots,” which had various meanings-—all designed to be incendiary. Most people love their “mama” and don’t like having her name become part of a dispute. That’s why it’s a good insult-—it works.

“Your mother wears army boots.”

Somehow I don't think that would be described as obscene.

Gates had already called him a racist. This is a good interview if you have time to read it or watch the video.

The Cambridge police know what was said. That's why they are supporting their fellow officer.

I guess Sgt. Crowley had to make the report politically correct for the Cambridge police department.

Have you seen the Chris Rock video about how not to get your butt kicked by the police.

Imagine the scene where the black guy is rushing out of the car to get in the face of the cop.

A Yo Mama phrase could come out at that time.

Talking about someone’s mother is fighting words. There are thousand’s of ‘your momma’ insults. Saying ‘Your Mamma’ is usually enough. It was where I grew up.

I suspect Gates didn’t just say ‘yo momma’. I suspect it was a vulgar reference to Crowley’s mother. That’s why we haven’t HEARD the tapes. Oh, to be a fly on the wall when the cops were listening to those tapes!

This is one of the most outrageous bits of Gates’s behavior. He denies that he said anything about Crowley’s mother at all, and that Crowley must have made it up after watching ‘Good Times’ episodes back in the day. Yet, here’s a clip of him in 1996 where he also talks about trying to end the hundreds of years of ‘yo’ moma’ insults in the black community (towards the end of the clip):

http://stuckon-stupid.com/2009/07/27/henry-louis-gates-explains-the-one-ngger-syndrome/

Now, do you really believe Crowley made it up?

Yes, I've passed the Chris Rock video on to several people over the last few days and we've all had fun with it. If someone was trying to insult me by using derogatory comments about my mother, I'd probably roll my eyes and walk away because at that point I'd know I'm dealing with a moron. In other words, my mom doesn't need me to defend her honor to an idiot. Now, I do realize it's different for men, or at least it seems to be. As I said before, it looks like those are well known “fighting words”. It's just something I'm not familiar with as a female and mother—but, I only have daughters, lol.
