Is this like that e-verify thing? Didn’t that get repealed or something because it’s racist or bigoted or steals the civil rights of illegal aliens?!

Even though Shuler is a Dem, there are plenty of Reps supporting this bill, i.e., the SAVE Act. We should be contacting our congresscritters to support it.

Ditto on the comment that this is already pretty much being done. I’m doing my 5th set of new hire papers in the last 2 years, and I’m pretty sure that employers are indeed verifying.

This is one of those “feed red meat to my base” bills that probably won’t get out of committee, and if it does, will die at the end of the session.

Schuler is a blue dog in Western NC.

We need more blue dogs in NC. Reps Ethridge, Price, and Miller are so damn liberal they could represent San Francisco without a stretch.

This is just an attempt by Shuler to get reelected. Typical blue-dog move. Lay on the ground for the libs, but every once in a while do ‘something’ to show that they are ‘conservative’. Either way, they continue to give power to liberals.

Whatever his reasons, the SAVE Act deserves our support. There are far more Reps than Dems supporting this bill. Last year we failed narrowly to get a discharge petition to get the bill on the floor for a vote. Pelosi has been fighting it tooth and nail and stopping it from a vote.

Heath is in my district and it’s pretty conservative. He’s right on the gun issue and opposes the current health care bill (but will vote for one if he’s pressured). He voted against the stimulus bill but he voted for the cap and trade bill. So, kind of a mixed bag. This bill will go absolutely nowhere but looks good on his resume come re-election time. It’s nothing more than a smokescreen for his voters.

Cap and Trade is going to be Heath’s demise. When the effects of it hit his opponent will bludgeon him to death with it. Heath stunk as QB for Redskins and as a congressman too.

Bingo. This bill is going nowhere and Shuler knows it. The Democrats (and too many big-business sycophant Republicans) are going to cut this off at the knees.

Well, that won’t be a bad thing, since this law has no reason to be passed. I can assure you that employers all have the memo on verification. The only ones not doing verification are those intent on breaking the law.

Just like the concealed gun bill vote from yesterday. They knew they had enough libs to kill it, so some blue dogs voted for it so they can go home and show their ‘conservative’ credentials.

The bill is being cosponsored by David Vitter in the Senate. The bill would:

* Require employers to use the federal government's E-Verify database to make sure they're hiring legal workers.

* Increase the number of Border Patrol agents by 6,000.

* Create a pilot program to increase aerial surveillance and use other new technology to secure the border.

* Hire more Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and create grants for some local law enforcement officials.

* Expedite removal of illegal immigrants by expanding detention capacity and adding immigration judges.

They all seem to be very reasonable and effective steps in the fight against illegal immigration. Which is exactly why it's dead-in-the-water. The Dems don't want to stop illegal immigration because that will be their power base in a few years. And, too many Republicans don't want to stop it because their big-business donors want to keep their labor costs as low as possible.

All it will do is bolster the bona fides of Shuler as a moderate, even a "conservative dem" (whatever that is) in his primarily conservative district.

While his intentions are very political because his butt is on the line, we should still support such measures. Shuler is a snake but even a broken watch is correct twice a day.
