Report: Palin Misused Legal Defense Fund [Updated WaPo report with lawyer comments]
WaPo ^ | July 20, 2009 | Chris Cillizza

Posted on 07/21/2009 8:40:57 PM PDT by Al B.

Update, 10:15 p.m.: Randy Evans, the attorney who helped Palin set up the Alaska Trust Fund, released a statement moments ago dismissing the allegation that there was any impropriety in its founding as "absolutely untrue".

Added Evans: "It was specifically patterned after well recognized trusts of prior Presidential candidates as well as high profile public servants. As with other public servants, there is no impropriety in the creation or operation of such a trust and any suggestion to the contrary is candidly absurd."

Evans, a partner in the firm of McKenna, Long & Aldridge, is a well known Republican attorney, having served as outside counsel to then Speakers Newt Gingrich (Ga.) and Dennis Hastert (Ill.).

Update, 9:35 p.m.: Palin's attorney, Thomas Van Flein, has released a second statement making clear that the soon-to-be-former Alaska governor is looking into her legal options.

Van Flein promised that he would be "contacting the appropriate authorities for review and action."

Politicos are not stupid. They know this as well. The question was how were they going to react? Now we have a sign they will never let up on Sarah, never.

The independent investigator, Thomas Daniel, ...

Daniel is about as independent as an octopus is to its tentacles.

Daniel is a member of the Perkins Coie law firm and contributed $1,000 to Democrat Mark Begich's campaign. Begich defeated incumbent Republican senator Ted Stevens last fall.

Perkins Coie's clients have included many Democrats in Congress, as well as the Democratic National Committee and the presidential campaigns of Barack Obama and John Kerry.

Robert F. Bauer, chair of the political law group at Perkins Coie, served as general counsel to Obama for America. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2297729/posts?page=293#293

The Seattle-based firm also represented Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire in her protracted 2004 recount battle with Republican Dino Rossi.

In Minnesota, of the $1.3 million in debt listed by the Al Franken campaign, $926,839 is owed to Perkins Coie , the law firm of recount attorneys Marc Elias and Kevin Hamilton.

I would laugh except it usually took me all of 10 seconds to “find Waldo” on those *huge* posters.

[probably because Waldo actually exists....sort of]

This is absolutely hilarious! For the first time in almost two years, the MSM is afraid to mention Obama. The worship has become tedious (and the people now see he has no clothes) and defending him is too risky. Quick-dredge up something meaningless about Gov. Palin or, better yet, something disgusting about Michael Jackson! Too funny!!

Hey AP, hey Wapo. Nice try. Get used to these words: “President Sarah Palin”.

From your mouth to God’s ears. I hope that happens. I will campaign for her, raise money for her, I’ll fly to Alaska and be her campaign manager. Whatever it takes. Just imagine it, Sarah Palin, first Conservative woman President, the reaction from the libs will be priceless. They will all hang themselves..NICE!!

Of course they are afraid to mention him, they are the ones that got him elected. They are responsible for making sure no one ever puts him in a bad light. If Obama fails, they look stupid because everyone and my dogs know that the media got Obama elected

I like your Mencken quotes, especially the one about the many laws cluttering our books.

Listening to Rush and Levin yesterday, they played a sound bite of Obammie the Commie with some news thing. She asked him why a deadline for health care.

His response?

If you don’t set a deadline, nothing gets done in this town.

Nothing gets done?

NOTHING GETS DONE!!!???

I guess THAT’S why there are over 700 laws on the books nicking away at the 2nd Amendment?

I suppose THAT’S why the tax code is thicker than the NYC phone book?

I suppose THAT’S why the scumbag leftists managed to write a law of over 1000 pages that tramples the most basic rights of human beings?

What a lying SOS commie that LAWYER is.

People wanted change.

So they voted for another lawyer.

Idiots.

All of this is moot anyway. Once Palin is free, she’ll make millions on the speech, fundraising, and book circuit. I think she’ll probably pay her own legal bills and refund the money from the Alaska Trust Fund back to the donors.
