Shoot it down: Senate must kill amendment that would dangerously gut gun laws

Tuesday, July 21st 2009, 4:00 AM

The pistols-for-everyone-everywhere crowd in Washington has engineered diabolical legislation that would blow gaping holes in New York's gun control laws. The measure must be stopped.

Republican Sen. John Thune wants Americans across the country to be able to carry concealed weapons, including Americans who live in, work in or visit this city and state. That's apparently the way of life, and death, in his beloved South Dakota.

But what flies in Sioux Falls, population 150,000, or capital city Pierre, population 14,000, does not make it in the world's safest big city, population 8.4 million, where the police have saved thousands from gun deaths by vigorously enforcing weapons laws.

Thoroughly distorting the legislative process, Thune has attached a pro-gun amendment to a defense authorization bill. It would let anyone granted a concealed carry permit by any state carry a concealed handgun in any other state that issues such permits.

Which New York does. But not all concealed carry permits are created equal. New York has some of the strictest rules in the country, and it doesn't have reciprocal agreements with other states that allow visitors to bring guns across the state line.

The daily news is a worthless rag, written for people who can’t read or write English.
It’s typical liberal trash.

Politicians gravely fear a legally armed populace.

Chuck-You Skruumer is just about crapping his pants over this one...

“A well regulated militia, being necessary the security of a free state; the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” would gut a lot of gun laws. Period.

What the Daily Fish-Wrap fails to mention is that firearms violations are the first thing to be plea-bargained away in NYC.

>Politicians gravely fear a legally armed populace.

They should fear, even more, an illegally armed populace.

The comments are great ...

Chucky sees the real problem — The problem comes when the chosen few who have these ‘special permits’ that citizens can't get, these States, if they have special permits, must then allow commoners from other States to carry in their States.

It's sort of the same story there are two classes of citizens. You and me, and then there is Chucky and his ilk.

Why is it that gunphobics seem to have such a hard time distinguishing between guns in the hands of criminals and guns in the hands of responsible, law abiding people? Are they really that stupid or is it that they think we are that stupid?

Many states also get testy about radar detectors and scanning receivers;evidently an informed and/or armed populace is not desired by those in power.

Where is this utopian paradise? They can't be referring to NY, or any other large American city.

The Thune amendment would gut those safeguards. Anyone meeting the laxest standards of federal law - including people with misdemeanor convictions, long arrest records or alcohol abuse problems - would be able to walk the city streets packing heat. The NYPD could do nothing.

Hm, oh no, people with misdemeanors carrying weapons!! I guess this means someone unfortunate enough to get a public intoxication or disorderly conduct conviction shouldn't have the right to defend themselves in NYC! (And just to set the record straight, you can be charged w/ "public intoxication" if you are walking home from a bar after drinking... which is much more prudent, and probably cheaper than a taxi, than driving yourself home. Also, you could be charged with disorderly conduct if you say, refused to eat/pay for improperly cooked food at a restaurant... or refusing to assent to [illegally] being forced to disarm.)

They have to be referring to Singapore, a city completely populated by sheeple.

OneWingedShark,

I hope all is well with you in New Mexico. I am anxious to come to that state again, better than most of the others.

“would gut a lot of gun laws. Period.”

Only if those interpreting the law does so properly without activism. I do not trust judges, politicians, or govt. in general.
