Peggy Noonan: Sarah Palin Jealous
American Thinker ^ | July 18, 2009 | Stuart Schwartz

Posted on 07/18/2009 9:00:55 AM PDT by Al B.

You're Peggy Noonan and you're jealous. But it's not the normal kind of jealous, the kind reserved for girlfriends who can squeeze into size 2 jeans. No, it's the kind of jealous that hurts, that grabs your gut and twists, that has you howling with rage into your pillow in the middle of the night, screaming "It's not fair" like a two-year-old denied another piece of cake. It is Sarah Palin jealous...and it is consuming you.

You're Peggy Noonan and you're jealous. You are a card-carrying member of the intellectual conservative elite, a PBS-anointed expert on family values who worked for both Ronald Reagan and Dan Rather, a talented speechwriter and wordsmith. And you are fuming: Sarah Palin refuses to be yesterday's news. You just can't get her out of your mind.

And, what's worse, everyone continues to talk about her. You've tried everything, using your mainstream media platforms, your Wall Street Journal columns, and powerful friends -- so many of them -- to savage her, to give her a rhetorical beating so fierce that it would bring a smile to the face of Vince McMahon -- if you knew who he is, and if you had ever watched a WWE wrestling match, which he heads. "She is a complete elite confection. She might as well have been a bonbon," you wrote, your $300 manicured fingers shaking on the keyboard.

You're Peggy Noonan and you're jealous. So you loosed a multi-column primal scream: Palin is an idiot who is "out of her depth in a shallow pool", a woman who has no sense of personal limits because she is not even smart enough to realize she is "a ponder-free zone." Whoa-good one!

It’s sad really. Noonan’s had that great post 9-11 article that really captured a lot of emotions, but since then she’s had nothing to say, really, nothing at all.

Her views on Palin are a joke and a result of spending too much time in the NY echo chamber. The bigger problem is that some people believe her and the other whiners who complain about Palin.

In the end, we have to do our own analysis on the Palin situation, as I commented here:

You’re right - this really puts the elite b!tch in her proper place.

I used to really like Noonan’s columns. Maybe I was deluded, but I don’t think so. She changed. And it happened just about the time Palin came on the scene.

Now I wouldn’t spit on Noonan if she were on fire.

Ooooo....this article borders on elder abuse.

Peggy Noonan has to write about Sarah because it’s the only way she can sell her leaden prose...much as Al Franken had to write about Rush Limbaugh to make money on his pitiful book.

You do realize that it was Tina Fey, in the famous SNL skit, who said the Russia-from-my-porch line, and not Sarah Palin. Or do you get all your information from CNN?

I don't think it's jealousy. Men tend to think--they like to think--when two women are at odds it must be jealousy. But they're missing the point, and the trouble with Noonan, if they think that.

Remember, she went all crazy on George Bush around 2004. Noonan is a snob, an elitist. She thinks way too highly of herself. Judging by her remarks on both Bush and Palin, she's not a deep thinker but she's absolutely sure she is. Her problem has little or nothing to do with jealousy.

Peggy Noonan has LOST HER WAY — big time.

Now she is just a sad RINO like so many others who never really understood being conservative like William F. Buckley.

I think she faked the conservative identity so she could get a job with the Wall Street Journal.

Stuart Schwartz, in this article, really did a good job of demonstrating what a insufferable snob that she is — like so many of her liberal celebrity friends.

So are all the women who hate Palin. It is so obvious.

How can a woman with 5 children succeed all the way to governor without relying on the “handouts”. How did she make it?? This really bothers them.

Also they can't stand the fact that she is truly beautiful inside as well as outside.

Kick ace, Sarah!!

Sorry, but this article isn’t “different”, it’s just stated in different terms. To judge Gov. Palin by the average person identifying with her is narrow-minded. The music in the background on that is elitist, again. “We don’t want an average person, we need someone above average (like me).”

And to take Gov. Palin’s interview with Hannity as the sum total of her political views is to simply disregard her accomplishments. How is that any different than what the rest of the main stream media is doing?

This article, while stated somewhat more gently, isn’t any different than the others. It just simply ignores that Sarah Palin has the same values as a majority of Americans, believes in something greater than herself, and has accomplished a great deal.

...

You’re Peggy Noonan and you’re jealous. You are a card-carrying member of the intellectual conservative elite, a PBS-anointed expert on family values who worked for both Ronald Reagan and Dan Rather, a talented speechwriter and wordsmith. And you are fuming: Sarah Palin refuses to be yesterday’s news. You just can’t get her out of your mind.

...

You’re Peggy Noonan and you’re jealous. So you loosed a multi-column primal scream: Palin is an idiot who is “out of her depth in a shallow pool”, a woman who has no sense of personal limits because she is not even smart enough to realize she is “a ponder-free zone.” Whoa-good one! The rhetorical equivalent of the chickenwing camel clutch, where you come up behind and twist her arm behind her back, and then force her face to the mat.

...

You’re Peggy Noonan and you’re jealous. You pal around with Sawyer and Couric, Jane Fonda, Marlo Thomas, Lily Tomlin — the world is your aging oyster — and The New York Times (which is sort of iffy on your writing) admires you for the company you keep.

...

But you’re Peggy Noonan and you’re jealous. Why didn’t you get acclaim for your accomplishment? You’re every bit as go-get’m as that baby mama from the tundra. You went before the commission hand-in-hand with actor Kevin Kline and Woody Allen — just a couple of guys from the ‘hood — and protested this outrage.

...

You’re Peggy Noonan and you’re jealous. You don’t understand it: Sarah Palin has never stood in front of bulldozers with Kevin Kline, and yet they cheer her. And she wouldn’t stand anywhere near Woody Allen, who she’d probably insist register as a pedophile. The assorted celebrities — neighbors all — cheered your courage in noting that your wealthy enclave, filled with the best and brightest, did not need a building that was the equivalent of low-income housing, what with units starting at a mere $7 million. Talk about slumming.

...

You’re Peggy Noonan and you’re jealous. You started a new venture, “The Women on the Web” website, a very conservative, free-enterprise thing to do and still you are not appreciated.

...

You’re Peggy Noonan and you’re jealous. Your “beyond the mundane” co-founders — “buds” as the Sarah Palin types so crassly put it-for your new venture are the essence of your kind of middle America: they include “60 Minutes” reporter Lesley Stahl; actresses Candice Bergen (actress, Democratic and Planned Parenthood spokesperson), Whoopi Goldberg (dropped by advertisers after a nasty Bush joke at a Democratic fundraiser and then hired by The View, a Barbara Walters talk show on ABC ), and Marlo Thomas (a major Democratic donor who is married to Bush-hater Phil Donahue), your type of conservatives, which puts them a bit to the right of Hugo Chavez.

...

You’re Peggy Noonan and you’re jealous. And, worst of all, Sarah Palin is not.

...

GOOD ARTICLE!

To hell with Peggy!

My own opinion is that anyone who’s able to offer constructive criticism ought to do just that. The more I read of Palin, the more awed I become. So if parsy, who is always quick to offer observations, believes himself to be qualified, I certainly welcome him to take that wheel.

I don’t mean to presume here, but in case parsy, who has his own geographical and intellectual insufficiencies, doesn’t know it, here’s a little gift for him. The distance between Little Diomede Island (Alaska, USA) and Big Diomede Island (Russia) is a mile and a half. If they were to decide to attack us, it is not far-fetched to believe that Alaska would be on the target short-list.

Addendum: Palin said that she could see Russia from parts of her home state. parsy, who probably likes clarifications, would probably have preferred her to expound on it. “Alaskans are always aware of the threat we face given our proximity to nation that we can’t yet count among our friends, ......” Palin appears to take the view of President Calvin Coolidge and American intellectual Mark Twain both of whom believed that ‘tis better to keep one’s mouth closed and be regarded a fool, than to open it and dispel any doubt. parsy, who makes valuable contributions from time to time, would do well to heed that advice.

This is just an epic smackdown. hard to pick a favorite paragraph but I particularly loved this one:

You're Peggy Noonan and you're jealous. You don't understand it. Sure, maybe she has accomplished a few things (like the $26 billion dollar natural gas pipeline deal, restructuring Alaskan government, and taking an ice pick to corrupt politicians). But she has no style, no pizzazz -- she just does stuff. But so do you -- and you can't understand why you don't get the same adoration. After all, didn't you go before the New York Landmarks Preservation Commission and not just protest, but elegantly protest -- so said The New York Times -- a 16-story tower a developer wanted to build in your ritzy Upper East Side Manhattan neighborhood? Sarah Palin wouldn't have done that; she's not brilliant enough to understand preservation. She probably would have looked at the jobs the construction would create and given it a déclassé "Hell yeah!"

I'm convinced that a majority of American voters do not want God inveigling political territory. They are content to say a prayer for someone, even occasionally attend Church, but to open and read their Bibles daily is a 'bot' too much.

Sarah Palin appeals to some on a gut level, a gut that senses her openness to God's Love and Grace (Trig is getting it through her) and will humble herself before the Lord when she needs guidance. That is over the top to the majority of American voters who keep that god guy in a secure bottle for occasional viewing. They sensed George Bush got on his knees when he sought Guiadance. It never set well with the elites don'tchaknow.

Is it the same no. of people who think that George W. Bush said the banal “Either you are with us or against us?” He, in fact, accurately called out the Europeans when he said, “Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists.” Not long after, Spain answered, “We are with the terrorists.”

Like many commentators on Palin, Kristia Cavere at Renew America makes simple assumptions about why people strongly support Sarah Palin. For instance, its because she is ‘one of us’, or because she was so savagely attacked in the Media. all while her supporters overlook her alleged inability to articulate on policy issues and give good interviews, even to ‘friendly’ interviewers like Sean Hannity.

I think Cavere is missing an important aspect of why people support Palin. It seems to me that a key difference between those who are positive to Palin and those who are not is this. Those who are positive have taken the trouble to actually examine her career and accomplishments closely; her detractors have not, or if they have, ignore or surpress them. The emphasis here is what she actullay did; no one is suggesting that she can spout like your average policy wonk. Arguably, between January 2007 and the end of her second legislative session in April 2008, Governor palin accomplished more than her predecessor had in 25 years, and with massive bipartisan support. Arguably she did more in that time than Barrcak Obama or Hillary Clinton had done in their entire careers, in spite of their capacity to ‘talk the talk’. It is the real ability to ‘walk the walk’ that wins support for Sarah Palin.
