Nearly half of the 1,000 job cuts announced by Harley-Davidson Inc. on Thursday will come from Wisconsin, the company says.
Of the 1,000 jobs to be eliminated, about 480 will come from Wisconsin, including the elimination of 300 hourly production positions.
About 180 salaried employees will lose their jobs here, including 100 from Harley-Davidson Financial Services.
The production of Harley-Davidson Sportster engines in Wauwatosa will be shut down for about 14 weeks late this year, including the company's entire fourth quarter.

Buying used is the way to go with any form of transportation.
Amazing.
Less than a month ago, journalists were crawling over eachother to write articles on how HD “bucked the trend” of layoffs and market constriction.
I wonder if Cramer rated HD as a “best buy” (j/k, I think they’re still privately owned).
HA....I heard someone last night say....”If Harley comes out with good numbers it means the recovery is on the way”.....hahahahahaha....
If all this stimulus money could help great American companies like Harley instead of going into municipal stinkholes and pork barrels we wouldn’t have this problem. They are turning a recession into a depression and worse yet, I think that is what these collectivists want!
Almost 90% guaranteed formula I now know...if a company reports horrible earnings and plans massive cuts and looks like it will eventually face bankruptcy, the stock will go sharply up. The MMs will squeeze out everyone who shorted taking all of their money and then the idiots who buy in thinking things are recovering will lose everything they have as it bottoms out.
Will the last manufacturing job in Wisconsin please turn out the lights when he leaves. Thank you.
There aren't that many boomers around who haven't already bought a hog that wanted one. I predict lower sales until another Easy Rider captures a new generation...
I’m sure these workers will find jobs making green motorcycles < /S >

Yes but our Pres_ent Ogabe despises American business and does all he can to destroy it. This is what Americans voted for. This is what we have. Stimulus money was allocated to criminal special interest groups.
ticker symbol HOG.
If American blue-collar workers were the source of much of HDs market, you’d have a point.
Unfortunately, HD began pricing their bikes out of that range long ago.
Increasingly, HDs are becoming “high-end” purchases relegated to those with high discretionary income or those willing to make the sacrafice.
Neither of those groups is doing particularly well in this economy.
Maybe the cost of those “well paid manufacturing workers” has some bearing on HDs price points?
Or murdercycles......
I actually feel sorry for those people. They don’t know that they are not much removed from being dead already. The life of a timid drone is a sad thing.
I'm not so sure about that anymore. Most of the H.O.G. folks I know are very upscale, Mercedes Benz type people nowadays.
Blue collar workers, tend to buy older bikes, or S&S bikes, custom bikes etc. Much more bang for the buck if you are informed, and most blue collar folks tend to be informed about bikes and the like.
Plus, the last Harley I bought new (1992) had more imported parts on it than my Nissan. Yes, it was “assembled” here, but almost everything was imported.
Decisions like that have turned allot of blue collar folks off to Harley.
My wife quipped that Harley riders of late tend to be white collar managers, who think that being blue collar is somehow “romantic and nostalgic”.
The only notable exception to this would seem to be Vietnam era vets (who are very loyal to brand), but they too seem to regularly buy used as opposed to buying new for the most part (and they quickly pull off the foreign exhausts and trim and replace them with American parts). Just my thoughts on it, I'm sure the flames await.
I like that!
